After work I had ran straight home to get my "trap" phone. I didn't bring it to work because I wouldn't have time to respond. I walked in the house and my little sisters were sitting in the living room eating cereal with my dad.
"Hi Zayn!" They all greeted me.
"Hey guys. What are you lot doing?" I asked even though it was apparent.
"Just watching tv." Waliyah replied with a mouth full of food.
"That sounds nice."
"What are you doing home so early son?" Dad looked at me curiously. Usually I came home around 9 if I was lucky. It was 5.
"I applied for a new job they said that they would give me a call today. So I took off a little early in case they wanted to interview me again." I lied through my teeth, but he seemed to believe me.
"That's great! How much are they willing to pay you?"
"I'm not sure yet, but I figure more than what they pay me at the diner."
"So what do you have to do?"
That question left me stunned. I spat out whatever came to mind first, "Sales. I'm gonna start out as a temp and work my way up."
"You know temps don't get paid much if not anything? They're just there for experience." I could see my dad getting suspicious again.
"Ya but not here. They said they needed employees really bad. I gotta go dad and make sure they didn't call me." I said hastily and walked to the backyard.
I dug in the shed and pulled out the cellphone Chang gave to me. There was several messages and 2 missed calls. Both from Chang. I dialed back the number.
"You finally decided to call back?" I heard him sneer.
"Ya sorry I was at work." I rubbed the nape of my neck nervously.
"Anyways, my boy Ren told me he's willing to sell you a car seeing how you'll need one I told him you'd pick it up soon as you can. Free of charge until you can get enough to start paying back."
"Alright. Thanks. Where does he live?"
"Downtown Seventh Street. Its a dealership called "Murray's". Tell him I sent you and he'll get you set up."
Seventh Street. Murray's.
"Oh and I got you a place. I'll send you a text about it later."
"Sounds good." And then he hung up. I scrolled through the messages and saw people were already asking me for delivery. I bit my lip. I needed to get this car and fast.
I took the bus again because it was a whole lot faster than me walking. On my way there I checked my messages and people were asking me to meet up to give them a gram or an eighth. The thought popped in my head that I needed a scale too. Stress started to creep up on me, I thought this job would be a whole lot easier but I guess I was a bit more unprepared then I had anticipated.
I only had a 100 bucks in my bank account and I had to pay my phone bill and house bill. My paycheck was gonna be less now that I had cut my hours. I looked out the window trying to distract myself and flecks of water sprinkled the window. It was about to rain. I relaxed a little bit and put my earphones in, leaning back into my seat.
The bus stopped near Seventh Street so I got off, hoping I wouldn't get lost in the rain since it started to come down harder now. I pulled my hoodie tight and treaded, occasionally asking people for directions. When I got there I was drenched and the sky seemed to get darker sooner and sooner. I walked inside the shop and a bell rung to announce my presence. I sat down in a chair, waiting for a turn at the desk. Somebody was already standing there.
