'Mum please, I really don't want to go to the carnival. Please don't make me.' Remus pleaded. He honestly couldn't think of anything worse.
'Remus honey, you need to get out more. 17 year old boys don't spend all their time inside.' She responded, desperate for Remus to get some sun and social interaction.
'17 year old boys also don't go to carnivals!' Remus yelled, he had history homework that wasn't going to do itself.
'Just go. Please.'
Remus hated upsetting his mum. She really knows whats best for her baby boy and he knows how hard she tries. Life has been hard on Hope Lupin ever since her husband, Lyall, walked out on her and Remus on her son's third birthday.

It was a sunny, spring afternoon and Hope had just arrived home from picking her cheerful son home from kindergarten. Remus rambled on about the story book that their teacher had read to them before nap time. Hope wished that her life was as simple as her sons.
As they walked through the door, remus sat himself on the couch and played with one of the toys strewn across the floor while his mother made herself a coffee. Normally, Lyall would be home when Hope came home with Remus. Lyall Lupin worked from home for most of the time. Sometimes he left for exotic destinations, like Australia. He was a world renowned expert on deep sea fish, which Hope couldn't really wrap her head around as she has never seen the ocean, but she knew that it meant the world to her husband.
As Hope went down to her bedroom to change into a comfier outfit, she noticed a small envelope next to her bedside table. Intrigued and confused by the letter, she walked over and picked it up, tracing the inky letters, spelling out her name. What could this mean? She carefully opened the letter and read the following message.
My dearest Hope,
I am sorry. I can't do this anymore.
I still love you and our son. Can you understand?
Lyall
Hope never saw this coming. Her mind raced with the reasons why her husband would leave her, leave Remus. A pained sob escaped from her mouth as tears formed in her eyes. How could her Secretary job support her son? How could she pay the bills? With all of these questions in her mind only one thing was clear to her.
She will never forgive Lyall Lupin for this.

Remus trudged to his bedroom and looked at himself in the mirror. His Amber eyes were filled with annoyance; his wavy, sandy coloured hair looked unruly. He truly looked a mess. He opened his cupboard and found his favourite mustard yellow jumper and a his favourite pair of jeans. It was true what his mum said. He never left the house. He didn't really have any friends. He wasn't entirely sure why, he tried to be nice to everyone but they all stared at him. Maybe it was his sense of style? Due to this, he surrounded himself with books. He loved learning and he did very well in school. He thought that if he had nothing, he should dedicate himself completely to his academics. He was okay with this, so why wasn't his mother?
