When my mom got me a scholarship to a high school, she didn't mention it was Mercury Prep High. I would have tried to look at least a little nicer. This school has 3 stories and is spread out almost like a miniature college. When my mom dropped me off at the school, I immediately wanted to crawl into a hole. Watching the newest episodes of Grey's Anatomy and eating cheddar Ruffles in a small hole didn't sound like a bad idea.
"Mom! Why can't I just go to a regular public school? I would at least fit in at a public school." I frowned at my mother.
"Valerie, going here on a scholarship will also help you get a scholarship to college if you keep up the good work. This is the best I could do after your father cheated." She had a angry look on her face and her knuckles were turning white from gripping the steering wheel. I knew this was hard from her and she needed a new start. The least I could do was be there for her.
"It's fine mom. I'll keep up the good work, you don't have to worry about me." I smiled and gave her a hug.
"Have a great day. Make new friends." I let go of her and I could see the bags under her eyes. We just moved here to California two weeks ago and it has been over a month since my mom and dad broke up. I hopped out the car and looked down at my shoes. These beat up Target shoes, were going to be the death of me. Everyone piling in the school had their own cars and their shoes all look brand new. Their parents do all pay over 3,000 dollars to go here each year.I pad down my uniform walked in the school. It was easy to find the office as soon as I stepped inside. Everything looked so neat and well put together here, this was not the place for me to be.
"Hi, I'm Valerie Vibe. I'm a new student on a scholarship and I needed my schedule." The lady looked up from her computer and gave me the fakest, biggest smile I have ever seen.
"We are glad to have you chose this school as your choice. Here is your schedule along with a map and your locker combination. First period just started so you should get on a hurry." I took the papers and walked out the office. The halls were empty besides a few students who did not care about being late. As I walked down the hall, I could here my old shoes squeaking against the floor. The school had a trophy case on their wall of all the trophies clubs and sports have won. I walked up to it and looked at the cheer and football team. I had to know which people to avoid the most. These students looked so happy wearing their uniforms. One guy stood out the most, he glaring at the camera and did not look happy to be on the football team. After getting a good look at the people, I continued walking. I dreaded walking into my first period with everyone turning their heads to look at me because that is always how it is for the new student. My brown, plain hair was thrown back in a messy bun but I put some make up on to cover my bags under my eyes. Hopefully people would get the message to not talk to me, like anyone would want to anyways.
I found my first class. Room 309. This was my AP chemistry class. I took a deep breath and pushed the door open. Immediately, each person turned their head to the door and looked straight from my face to my shoes. I gave my teacher the note that the office lady gave me and went to the back to take an empty seat.
"Please introduce yourself to the class." Mr. Brown said to me.
"I'm Valerie and I'm new here." I sat down at the back of the class and mentally face palmed myself. Of course I'm new here why did I have to say that. I blame teachers for pressuring ourselves in front of everyone to introduce ourself.I heard people snickering around me and I couldn't help but think they were talking about me. Suddenly, I get a note thrown at me and it lands on my desk. The note says,
Nice sneakers lol. Were those your moms while she was in high school? No one is going to want to talk to you in those.
I crumbled up the note and threw it in my bag. I have 6 months left in school and I can't get in a fight with a girl especially with this scholarship. I sunk lower in my chair with humiliation shown in my face.
By the end of the day, I was happy to walk out the school. Walking through the halls, people kept on laughing at me and pointing at my shoes. I'm sorry we can't all be rich and have the latest fashion. This place is going to be the death of me if my parents aren't. As soon as I walk out the school, I bump into someone. My small frame compared to how tall they are, I fall onto the ground. Can this day get any worse? How hard is it to not be noticed?
"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry. I wasn't paying any attention. I'm sorry." I start picking up my stuff in a hurry, avoiding eye contact.
"What the hell? Watch where you're going." He watches me pick up his stuff. When I get back up, I get a chance to look at him. Let me tell you, he was gorgeous. He was tall, definitely over 6 feet. With dark brown eyes, and short brown hair, he was probably well known around the school. I saw him look at me and frown when he saw my shoes. This is the last thing I need happening to me. A popular guy making fun of my shoes along with other people.
"Well maybe you should also pay attention to where you are walking." I scoffed and brushed past him with my head down and keep on walking.
"Hey! Who are you?" But I was already hopping in my car and my mom drove off from the giant school. While my mom was driving home, I realized something. That guy I bumped into was the same guy that was glaring at the camera. Micah Lo. I bumped into a football player! He looked like bad news and I already made myself more noticeable. I just need this year to be over.———————————————————————————
