In the little red house
Lived a mouse
His name was Dudley
He loved his house
Oh so fondly
At night when the humans would sleep
He would pop out his hole
And take a peep
At the glorious food, the humans left over
Sweet berry pudding
And apple turnover
"This was the life," he said
But out came a beast
His joy turned to dread
And interrupted his feast
"This is my house can't you see?
All this food is mine.
It doesn't come free."
"My name is Lily
And I am a cat.
I didn't know my new best friend
Would be a rat."
"We are not friends!
And we'll never be!
You're a cat and I'm a mouse!
Surely, you'll eat me!"
The cat walked away
All sad and somber
While the mouse helped himself
To the fresh peach cobbler
The next morning was the same
The cat and mouse didn't talk
It was a shame
That night came trouble
The mischievous bee stopped by
And his name was Bumble
"This is my house now!" Said the bee
"Go on and run!
Don't cry when you flee!"
The mouse was scared
"But I lived here my whole life!
It's all I ever cared!
Let's make a deal.
What if we shared?"
"I do not share!
Not with your kind!
But I'll give you a sting.
I'm sure you wouldn't mind!"
But out came a voice
Way off in the distance.
The mouse was relieved.
For this one instance.
"Leave him alone!"
Can't you see!
This is his home!
And home is where you ought to be!"
The bee was shocked.
At the furry critter.
Never has anyone stood up for a rat.
A rat sole bitter.
The bee was embarrassed
And made its run
The cat leads a roar
Oh so fun.
"Thank you for saving me.
And my house.
But why would you risk your life
For a stubborn mouse?"
"Because it's my house too.
And yours as well.
I'm not a bad cat.
Can't you tell?"
"Perhaps you were right.
I shouldn't have judged.
Would you like to share some cake?
You can lick the fudge."
So the mouse and cat ate the cake
And the leftover food
For goodness sake.
And that's the story
Of how the mouse found a friend
A friendship that would last forever
Till the very end.
