That evening, before the seven friends were to go down to the Great Hall for Hogwarts's official Halloween dinner, Samantha was interrupted by Halley, sprinting up the dorm stairs.
"Is everything OK?" the blonde witch asked worriedly. She had taken a little bit of time out that afternoon, while the rest of her friends were setting up the Prefect's Bathroom for their Halloween party.
"Fine!" Halley beamed. "Totally fine!" Everything's set up and looks really good. We got the Butterbeer barrel up alright as well - we had to use the Invisibility Cloak and a couple of Disillusionment Charms but it went OK - James really likes it - he's gonna go as the Invisible Man now instead of a zombie which means Peter doesn't have to go as a rat anymore... Everything's just grand."
She collapsed on the bed with a dramatic sigh.
"I'm glad" Samantha smiled wearily, twisting her hair between her fingers.
"You feeling better?" Halley then asked, rolling over to study her friend with concerned eyes. Samantha shrugged lamely.
"I don't know" she replied. "I can't quite shake it off like you all always do. I just feel like something is majorly wrong."
"With you, or in the castle?" Halley questioned carefully, hopping over to cuddle Samantha on the bed. The blonde witch bit her lip, trying to decide.
"In the castle" she said eventually. "And I feel like, whatever it is, it's going to come after me."
Halley sucked through her teeth.
"Righty" she muttered. "Well, one thing's for certain, Sam. Whoever it was that you saw can't possibly get you when you're in this dorm. Can they?"
"Can't they?"
Halley shook her head, grinning.
"Course not" she scoffed. "You heard their voice when they tried to Stun you. It was a man. And no men can get up this staircase."
"Point taken" Samantha admitted, wriggling a little as Halley continued to cuddle her.
"And" Halley added, head now squished on Samantha's shoulder. "None of us six are gonna let you go anywhere on your own, if you don't want to go. And, with the possible exception of Peter, cos he's about as useful as a Fizzing Whizzbee in a duel, we'd all throw everything we've got at anyone who tries to attack you. And, in some of our cases, that's quite a lot of nifty wand-work."
"Are the others downstairs already?" Samantha asked, squeezing Halley back before attempting to wriggle free. She was eventually released.
"That's the spirit!" Halley sniggered, as Samantha nearly overbalanced off the bed. "Yeah, they're just finishing off the decor for the party. I think the seven of us are gonna get changed down there, to save time, and to stop anyone twigging what we've planned. Grab your stuff. We'll drop it off in the bathroom, and all go down to dinner together."
Pulling Samantha up, Halley made her way to the door, but met Lily coming through it. The ginger haired witch looked furious.
"You OK?" Samantha commented, as Lily flung herself on her bed, sulking.
"Marlene" came the muffled reply.
"She found out about the party she's not invited to?" Halley guessed, as she and Samantha came now to sit on Lily's bed.
Lily rolled over.
"No" she retorted. "She's wanting me to go down to Hogsmeade with her tomorrow, before we leave for end of half-term. She's going on a date with Abel Sanderson, you know, Mikayla's brother-"
