The rain beat against the window, no sign of relenting. The oak tree outside the big window swayed along with the rhythm of the wind. The library was illuminated by a simple lamp next to my armchair. I was too thoroughly engrossed by the novel in my hands to notice the sound of the rain or the way that the tree moved. The only thing that existed at that moment was me and the book. My mind was in Alagaesia. A fictional world filled with dragons and elves. It was a place I didn't need to pretend to fit in to. The characters were ones that I could relate to. I didn't fit in to the society that I was born in to. The fact was that I can be myself when reading a book. People wouldn't judge me within these works of genius. Books were and still are home to me. They are the only place that I'm not an outsider. Not an outcast.
I didn't ask to be born into this way of living. Neither did I ask for the name that I had been given. Gwendolyn. I resent that my parents hadn't decided to name me something normal like Jane or Lucy. I had been given a name which makes it difficult to fit in with groups of people. School had been a nightmare. The constant teasing and lack of friends. My only sanctuary was the Library and my only friend was the Librarian. Thankfully those days were behind me; my days were now spent in the library at home. My parents would probably consider this a waste of time if they even thought about me. Not that I'm complaining. Them not paying attention to me makes reading a lot easier. No parents to constantly nag me about chores or at least doing something relatively productive with my time.
My days now consist of reading and then later in the evening, going for a walk to the corner shop to buy something unhealthy and fattening. I didn't care about my weight. I'm not that sort of girl. Nor do I care about the clothes I wear. Comfort comes before appearance to me. Why feel uncomfortable just to look good? My wardrobe contains nerdy T-shirts, jeans and hoodies. Nothing more. I had a routine and that's what led me to experience something straight from one of my novels.
