Maya's POV

Pain. That's all I felt. I felt no emotions, not happiness nor sadness, just pain. I laid there staring at the ceiling, numb, until I eventually fell asleep.

I was awakened by the sound of my apartment door flying open and someone screaming.

Police! Stay where you are!

I walked into the living room to see what was going on. I saw John standing with his hands in the air and a police officer handcuffing him.

"Maya Hart?," A voice said as a flashlight shined in my face.

"Yes?" I said terrified.

"Come with us. You're safe now," the officer said.

"How did you know?" I quietly asked the officer.

"I told them, Maya. I had to, he could've killed you," said Riley who appeared in the doorway.

I ran over to her crying. They cut off my ankle bracelet I got in a car to go to the Matthews apartment and didn't let go of her once. Topanga asked me some questions and then she called someone who was on my case. Riley and I were sitting together on the couch watching tv.

"How did you know?" I asked Riley.

"How did I know what?" She asked

"Know what was going on," I replied.

"When you said goodbye on the phone, you never actually hung up. I heard the whole thing. I had to tell someone, I couldn't just let you get hurt."

"Thank you," I said as she wrapped her arms around me.

Topanga got off the phone after talking on it for 15 minutes.

I looked up at her. "What's gonna happen? Are they sending me to a foster home a million miles away?"

"No, they're sending you to your father's. He's coming here to pick you up."

I thought back to the last time my dad sent me a letter telling me he moved. It was about 5 years ago and he moved to somewhere in North Carolina. "I'll never see you guys again!" I yelled.

"Actually, sweetie, he lives in the city."

"What!" I screamed in disbelief. "Since when?"

"I was told he moved back 3  years ago. He didn't tell you?"

"No, I haven't heard from him in  5 years."

"It's okay, Maya," Riley said rubbing my arm.

"The court wants you to spend two weeks of every month with your father so that you get used to it there if you decide to live there. You'll spend the rest of your time here with us," Topanga informed me, making me feel a little bit better about the situation.

"When is he coming?"

There was a knock on the door. "That would be him," she said.

She opened the door and there he was. One of many people who was supposed to protect me, but hurt me instead. One of the main causes of my emotional problems was standing in the doorway.

"Hi, Maya," he said plainly.

"Hi, Kermit," I said coldly.

"Well it's getting late, we better get going," he said.

Topanga hugged me goodbye. "You'll be just fine, sweetheart."

Then Riley hugged me. "Call me if you need anything."

"I will."

"Are you ready?" He asked.

"As ready as I'll ever be, I guess," I mumbled to myself.

I got in his car and we drove for about 15 minutes. He pulled up to a small two story house with a little yard and flowers in front. A young woman was standing at the front door.

I got out of the car and got my bags. We walked up to the porch.

"Maya, this is my wife Anna," he said.

"It's nice to meet you," she said extending her hand for me to shake it.

But I just glared at Kermit. "It's nice to know you got married," I said sarcastically pushing past Anna and making my way into the house. I put my bags on the kitchen table as Kermit and Anna made their way into the room.

"Anything else you wanna tell me?" I asked.

"Well—" he started before he was cut off by a young girl's voice.

"Daddy!" A little blonde girl said running into his arms.

"This is your little sister Madison. Madison, this is your big sister Maya." Kermit said

Madison couldn't have been more than 4 years old. "It nice to meet you," she said while giving me a hug that I had crouched down to receive. I was then shown to my room and promptly fell asleep.

For a whole week, I just slept. I refused to go to school and hadn't unpacked any of my things.

"What's wrong with her," I could hear Anna say to Kermit through the wall.

"Nothing is wrong with her, she just needs time to adjust."

"It's been a week and she's barely even come out of her room!"

"Fine, I'll go talk to her okay?"

Kermit knocked on my door and opened it. He came and stood in front of my bed that I was sitting on.

"I'm sorry, Maya," he began. "I shouldn't have left but I'm ready to be a better dad to you now."

"No, you stopped being my dad long before you even left."

"I'm sorry I hurt you, Maya. And whatever you want me to be for you, I will try to be for you," he said before leaving.

The 2nd week went excruciatingly slowly but I got through it. I really only interacted with Madison.  She's honestly the only thing I like about this place. I only speak to Anna and Kermit when I have to and I refuse to call him dad.

The next day was the day I got to leave and go to the Matthews. Topanga and Riley came to pick me up. "Riley, I missed you so much," I said kissing her.

"Who's this?" Madison asked running up to us.

"This is my girlfriend Riley."

"Who's this?" Riley asked.

"This is my little sister Madison. I'm gonna miss you kid, but I'll be back in two weeks," I said giving her a hug.

The two weeks at the Matthews went great as expected the two weeks at Kermit's went better than expected. Things had really changed and soon I looked forward to going to Kermit's but one thing stayed the same. I'm still the badass of Abigail Adams High School, but now I've got Riley.
