Passage 5: Confrontation

The town square was bustling with traders, customers and chatter when the trio arrived. They left the caravan just outside the town limits, the perfect place for a travelling merchant group.

"The inn is right over there," Dart pointed down a narrow pathway.

"I thought you were with the caravan," Indigo stated belligerently.

"My job was to lead them through the forest safely. Now I'm a companion to Milia," Dart responded matter-of-factly. The two exchanged glares.

"Great. Let's go grab a room," Milia turned to the boys. "We can drop our bags off and come back to the market. Dart," she retrieved his attention.

                "Yes, my lady?"

"About that matter we discussed earlier. Let me know as soon as you receive an answer." Dart nodded in response and pushed off the ground, fluttering his wings. He flew high above the stalls and roofs of the town and disappeared into the distance. Before Milia could turn and disappear into the crowd, Indigo caught her by the arm.

"Is there something you need to tell me?"

"No. Let go of my arm," Milia squirmed. He released her immediately and leaned in close.

"You didn't hire me to be a guide," he declared. "You found the fairy for that. You hired me as a bodyguard, and if I'm going to protect you, I need to know why." His voice was steady and cold. Milia took in a deep breath and motioned toward the inn.

"Fine. I'll tell you what I'm doing, but not here." The two disappeared into the crowd, headed towards the inn.
