I set my purse down on the counter and checked the clock, I had gotten home later than usual  l because I had a few more things to finish up at work. As I went into the kitchen, I saw my daughter Callie sitting at the counter, her head in her hands as tears fell down her face.

"What's the matter?" I said, racing over to her.

"Jake broke up with me." she said through her cries.

"How come?" I asked, sitting down next to her and putting a hand on her back.

"He said he didn't want to be tied down all summer. He wanted to have a summer without a girl friend. Probably so he can just hook up with other girls." she said.

"Well, some boys are like that and it doesn't seem like Jake was all that  caring,"  I said, trying to console her and for her to see the brighter side of the situation.

"But I loved him." she cried.

"I know you did, you're first love is always hard Callie." I said.

She turned to me, wiping the tears from her eyes and asked:

"Do you remember your first love, mom?"

I laughed, and I led her to the living room and we sat down on the couch.

"I don't know if you want to hear ancient history, darling." I said, pushing the hair out of her face.

"Sure I do, you never talk about when you were a teenager back in the day." she said.

"Back in the day? Don't make me sound like I'm too old." I said.

I took a deep breath, and my mind started piecing together the beginning to the end adding in every detail that was stowed away in my memories

"You might want to make us some coffee, this could take awhile."

June 7th,  1989

I untied my apron that was hanging around my waist and tucked it under my arm as I walked home from my shift at Rosie's Diner. The humidity caused sweat to gather at my hairline and on the back of my neck. It counted out the cash I had made from my tips and realized I finally had enough to get those platforms I wanted. I headed up the sidewalk to my front door and saw my sister, Carly's car in the driveway. She had finally finished her first year at college and had just came home today. Even though she only went to school 45 minutes away, she never really came home so I was excited to see her.

I went up to her room where she was unpacking boxes full of her clothes. As soon as she heard the door open, she turned around and her face lit up when she saw me there.

"Lia!" she yelled and gave me a big hug, almost lifting me off my feet. "I missed you!"

"I missed you too!"

Carly and I were always close, even though we would fight to no end about almost everything. I was always jealous of Carly since she was older. She had the long blonde hair, a slender figure, and the best sense of style. I grew up in envy of her and this past year, people said I was starting to look more like her and that was honestly the best compliment I could receive.

"Damn you really grew up" She said, looking me up and down. "Are those my earrings?"

"Well you left them here" I argued.

"Well my closet isn't open for you just because I'm not here," she snapped back.

"You wouldn't have even noticed they were gone!"
