Chapter 3 (Part 2): Instinct
CALEB
“THE NERVE OF THAT JERK FROM THE BASKETBALL SHOWER ROOM!”
When I heard the voice, it’s as if every cell in my body was in their hyperactive mode. They became so much alive.
“Wow, that was one hell of a vocal cord,” Avery commented.
“Do you think we should have her as the vocalist?” Nico joked. Maybe the guy developed his sense of humor after all, we never knew.
“I’m perfectly capable of being the vocalist,” Ezekiel answered in his silky voice. It was clear, he didn’t appreciate Nico’s brand of sense of humor.
Nico shrugged and offered an apologetic smile. Ezekiel rolled his eyes. Nico was forgiven.
Yeah, I know. That was one weird conversation, if it even was a conversation.
But even though I noticed the exchange I was hardly paying attention to them. My body was still frozen shock while my insides were already pushing me to look outside the door.
Caleb, was once again, unruffled as always. The guy must have ice water as blood. “Will somebody please close the door?”
I stood up and willed my body to move towards the door. When I reached it, I looked outside the hallway and found six students: a pair was busy devouring each other’s faces behind a pillar, another three were busy chatting and another one was a male student looking at the field.
The girl with one hell of a vocal cord was not around anymore.
“Kai, is there something interesting out there?” Alexiel asked.
Not anymore.
I shook my head and closed the door. “Nothing, I was just checking if the girl who shouted was still there.”
“Why?” Avery asked.
“Like you’ve said, that girl has one hell of a vocal cord.” I answered.
Somebody once told me: If you want a lie to be effective, tell half the truth.
“And is she? Still there I mean,” Ryanne asked.
“No.”
“Must have run away,” Avery guessed. Then he had this teasing glint in his eyes directed at me. “Didn’t you hear what she’d said? ‘The nerve of that jerk from the basketball shower room.”
I raised one-half of my eyebrows. “Are you implying something?”
He laughed. “Not really, I’m just thinking maybe she meant you.”
She certainly did.
“Very funny,” I retorted and sat back at my place on the couch. I loosened my tie as I felt the air getting heavier.
“Why are we again wearing uniforms and not casual t-shirts and jeans like any sane and normal high school?” I asked, suddenly bothered with it.
