Peter Parker was your average 15-year-old nerd. That is, if all nerds had spider powers. He led a double life as the super hero, Spider-Man! As Spider-Man he happened to meet lots of other cool heroes. One of which was his mentor, Tony Stark. AKA Iron Man.
Peter woke up early one day with a grin plastered to his face. A week earlier he had gotten a call from Tony saying that he was going to take him to the Stark Expo. Peter was too young to enter anything, but maybe it would give him some ideas for later years. This year the Expo was being held in Italy. Peter had gotten up early so that Mr. Stark could pick him up and they could fly to the Expo on his private jet.
Peter was about to jump out of his skin when Tony finally rang the doorbell. He quickly kissed May goodbye then carried his bags out to the car where Happy was waiting. The car ride to the airport was fairly uneventful. Peter rambled on about the exhibits he was looking forward to and Tony pretended to ignore him and play on his phone. (Even though he was listening intently to every word.)
Peter was still excited when they boarded the plane. That is, until take off. When Peter and Happy had flown to Germany he had been too excited to really take in the ride. Sure, he was excited now. But getting to fight Captain America is just a tad bit more exciting in Peter's book.
Peter glanced around nervously as the engines started up. Given that it was a private plane, Tony, Happy, and Peter were the only three on it besides the piolets. Tony and Happy had each gone off to their own corners of the plane, leaving Peter to sit by himself. It was just a plane after all. How bad could it be?
Bad. It could be VERY bad. Peter found out ten minutes later. And Peter still had another eight hours before they landed in Rome! It was mostly the turbulence that got to Peter. Any time the plane would hit a rough spot Peter would jump in his seat a bit. But he tried to not make it too noticeable. He didn't want Tony to think he was a wimp.
"You ok over there Pete?" Tony looked over at him concerned.
Peter noticed that he was gripping the arm rests rather tightly. He laughed nervously and unclenched his fingers. "Yeah sorry. It just surprised me when my ears popped that's all."
Tony didn't look completely convinced but he put his headphones back in anyway. He looked over to Happy who was already sound asleep. Peter let out a sigh of relief until they hit another bump. He went back to gripping the armrest.
Another hour had gone by. Peter thought that he had gotten used to the turbulence. Of how wrong he was. The plane hit a very large bump and the piolet came over the radio. "We've reached a rather rough patch of weather. It might take us a while to get out of it. Please make sure your seatbelts are fastened.
Peter looked around the room in panic. Happy was still asleep and Tony had his headphones in so neither heard the warning. Peter was already wearing his seatbelt so there was nothing more he could do but tuck his knees up to his chest as the plane got tossed around in the wind. Tears started to drip down his cheek.
Tony felt the plane hit a spot of turbulence. He decided it would be a good idea to check in on Peter. When he looked up he saw that Peter had his knees brought up to his chest. When he took his head phones out he could hear that he was quietly crying. Tony took that as his cue to act.
He quickly got up, making sure to keep his balance, and sat down in the seat across from Peter. He looked up when Tony took his hands and met his eyes. "Peter what's wrong?"
Peter tried to wipe his tears away on his shoulder. "No-nothing Mr. Stark..." suddenly the plane shook again, and Peter let out a yelp. As his crying intensified he instantly knew what the problem was.
Tony held his hands tighter "Peter are you afraid of flying?"
He sniffled a bit "I didn't think I was..." another shake "Mr. Stark I don't want to end up like my parents..."
That took Tony by surprise. He knew Peter had lost his parents when he was young. But he didn't know how they died. "Peter you aren't going to die. Planes are actually a lot safer then cars you know."
Peter looked him dead in the eyes. Tony could see he was very afraid. "Mr. Stark, my parents died in a plane crash..."
"Oh Peter..." he moved over to the seat next to him and wrapped him in a hug as best as he could. "Why didn't you tell me? We could have gotten to Italy another way."
Peter sniffled some more "I didn't want to be an inconvenience... Sorry."
Tony shook his head "You'd never be an inconvenience Pete." He gently smoothed his hair back. "Now. Everything is going to be okay I promise. Let's do something to take your mind off of it."
For the rest of the ride Tony and Peter played different board games to keep him from thinking about the plane. A few hours later they safely arrived in Italy. Peter had a great time at the Expo. He even got to meet some of his favorite scientists! Bruce Banner, Reed Richards, and tons of others whose names he couldn't even remember.
When the expo was over Tony offered to get a boat for him and Peter to ride back on but he declined. Once Tony had distracted him the plane ride hadn't been so bad. And the way home had been a definite improvement. Peter was lucky to have such a great mentor.
(A/N - Hey guys! :) Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it. I have a confession to make, I really hate flying. It's not a fun experience at all. Don't do it unless you have to! And that was my life tip for the day. Bye! Remember, with great power comes great responsibility!)
