There was just one problem.
"Oh my God, they are following us!" I insisted.
"What does your Dad even do that you need personal security?" Addy sort of huffed as she glanced over her shoulder. Her voice with touched with frustration and perhaps even jealousy. Aria and Sergio were amazing parents, but they were also amazingly ordinary. That is, as far as the twins knew.
"Oh man, this is bad, this is so bad. If they tell him where we are, if they tell him what I'm wearing...we should just go back now, I should just turn around, go home, beg for forgiveness and never leave my house again."
"Relax." Emma said putting an arm around my shoulder, she was walking on one side of me and Addy on the other as though they were my own sort of protection team. "We just have to lose them."
"They'll tell him."
"And he can yell at you after the party. But I mean hey, if you'd rather turn around now and not go, your call Charles."
I glanced over my shoulder they weren't very good at their job. They'd been tailing us all night. At first I wasn't so sure, but after the second time we'd changed locations and they had done the same it was without a doubt. Weren't these sort of people supposed to be, like, sneaky? If they were this bad at staying hidden, maybe they would be easy to kick off our trail too. I did want to go. I would get in a lot of trouble but when would this opportunity ever come for me again? When I was thirty? "How do we lose them?"
"Easy." Emma said and pointed with her head. "Cop, right up there."
"Cop?" I repeated and slowed down a little. "I'm not so sure-" Even though grandpa used to be a cop and Mom said my other grandpa, her Dad who died before I was born, was a cop and the best man she knew, Mom and Dad had been relatively on the same side when it came to approaching the police. That it could be a bad idea for Dad. If I was in danger my first call should be Dad, if unavailable Mom, if also unavailable there were 14 other emergency contacts in my phone I was to dial next and last if every resource had been exaggerated I could call them. Approach them only if it's life or death.
"Do you want to lose them or not? All we have to do is draw attention, he'll detain them, we run and go to the party. Easy."
Going to this party, my first real party, a college party...that was...close to life or death. Right? "Won't he like, want to ask us questions or something."
"Just run fast." Addy suggested.
"Okay." I agreed. It was a bad decision, and I knew it. But...but... they forced me into this! They had promised I could go out tonight if they could play dirty then so could I! "How do we...ya know, how do we do this?"
"A lot of crying and screaming. We have to be like, terrified."
"Like really terrified."
Oh I was. I should have been terrified to go home after this, but instead of I was too focused on the fear of my night being ruined and never having this opportunity again. My heart was beating too quickly, my heals clicking too loudly, I couldn't hear past them to hear the voice of reason in my head.
Maybe I did hear it loud and clear, I just chose to ignore it.
Addy and Emma kept glancing backwards. "Look." Emma whispered.
I looked over my shoulder again, this time not bothering to try to hide it. "I am."
"Now, be scared."
"Okay." I whispered and suddenly we were all screaming, the men Dad had enlisted to follow us jumped at the sound and began running towards us ready to protect me at all costs and having no idea why we were screaming. We in turn ran away.
Immediately the cop around the corner turned around to see what the commotion was about, he was in mid hot dog purchase and absent mindedly handed it to the person behind him in line as he started running to meet us.
The twins were full of shouts, "Help, oh God, they're following us, they're still after us, please help!"
I was rendered damn near speechless as the cop ran to us. He was fucking gorgeous, built like a God, his icy eyes were wide as he put a hand to the shoulder of one of the twins, she was very believably sobbing and pointing, his hair was dark and cut into an under cut, freshly styled as though he was going to a party himself. He put his hand on my shoulder to calm me down as he asked what was going on repeatedly trying to make sense of the twins and get a word out of me. I could feel the warmth of his hand through the thin material of the red dress the twins had put me into. I glance to his name tag. Officer Morgan.
The twins were pointing, and crying, their acting was outrageously good. If I didn't know that we were faking our fear, I would have been genuinely worried! I knew their Dad was the biggest push over when it came to them and I couldn't help but wonder how many fake tears they had conned him with.
"These men, they've been following us!" Addy finally managed through her gasps and sobs.
He looked past us, the men coming to a skidding halt as this seemed to register with them.
Us.
Police.
All looking at them.
They started to run in the other direction.
"Stay here." He said and took his walkie in one hand and gun in the other as he started past us to the men. "Freeze, police!" He called after them and pointed the gun, after a moment he lowered it. There were too many people on the street to shoot at them and he didn't actually know if they were armed or dangerous. Obviously he couldn't just shoot blindly, he would have to settle for pursuit on foot. "I said freeze!"
"Go!" Emma hissed and grabbed my hand, we started running in the opposite direction.
I ran with them but couldn't help but look over my shoulder to the disappearing officer. "What if he shoots them?" I asked as we ran.
"Then we don't have to worry about them telling your Dad what you're wearing."

If you are looking for a reminder of who some of the characters are and an explanation for my prolonged absence check the authors note at the end of chapter 4!
Remember, this is a STANDALONE BOOK so if you haven't read the other midnight mafia novels and don't know who the characters are I'm talking about, that's totally fine because they will be mostly background characters in this book. Those who have read the trilogy have an interest in where they've ended up though <3
