Dean's P.O.V.
"My baby loves Baby," I whispered to Sammy. He snorted and pushed me towards Chloe, telling me to ask her if Aella needed a booster seat when I gave him a bewildered look.I walked towards the small woman, meeting her penetrating gaze when I was about five feet away. It's official, this lady scares me. "Does Aella need a booster seat or-"
Chloe snorted, looking toward her granddaughter who jumped up on the seat and tried desperately to be taller than Sam. Sammy just laughed, bending down as far as he could but she still couldn't reach past his shoulders. Chloe looked back to me, the cool morning wind sweeping a few gray hairs from her tight ponytail. After putting them back in place, she said, "You could try and she'll find a way out in two seconds and brag about her 'powers over the human mind' for the entire day. I'd suggest you just leave her to do as she likes and she'll be quiet."
I nodded and as I turned to walk back to the car, Chloe reached a hand out to grasp my arm, her grip surprisingly strong. I faced her and something in her eyes had changed to resembled something like anxiety. Chloe released my jacket and twiddled her thumbs, her fingers unable to stop moving. She rubbed her palms on her apron and murmered, "Take care of Aella. No matter how unpredictable and headstrong she may be, you have to care for her. I know it must be hard to act like her father but it'll come to you. It always does. Now go, you have a long drive ahead of you." Chloe walked by me and bent down in front of Aella, enveloping the younger girl in two wrinkled, muscled arms. Aella clung on just as tight but quickly let go when her grandmother softly spoke something into her ear. Aella waved and smiled at Chloe, settling back into the leather seat.
I looked at the little girl in Baby, so perplexed at how a week ago I didn't have a daughter and now, I don't know. I'm a father. I have a kid. That girl is 50% me. I can't go hunting and risk my life so recklessly like I did before. Now I have something, someone, who needs me to be there for them. Of course I always had Sammy but that's different. He's a grown man, no matter how much I may deny it, and he doesn't need me. That little girl is mine to protect and care for and teach and I damn well will.
I climbed into Baby and put the key in the ignition, her purr as intoxicating as ever. The cool leather wheel felt right clenched between my hands, a touch as familiar to me as a gun held firmly in my grip, and I took a deep breath before hitting the gas.
Aella's giggle resounded from the back seat and I looked through the mirror to find her with a huge grin painted across her face. Her green eyes gazed through the mist, the trees whizzing by and opening time to time for a glance at the distant ocean. The slope was so steep that I was forced to go under 30, an untrustworthy wooden fence lining the mountain side which apparently was supposed to stop flies from rolling down the mountain.
Sammy spoke up, turning in his seat to look at Aella. "So, Aella-"
"Ronnie, please call me Ronnie."
"Okay, Ronnie, what do you like to do?"
"Um well, I mostly like hunting, drawing, listening to music, and reading." Ae-Ronnie said that more as a question than an answer. I looked back again and her leg was bouncing up and down, her cat placed on her lap as she stroked it. Damn it, why did I let that cat come with us? I hadn't even noticed until now but if I told Ronnie to take it back she would probably freak out so we're not gonna do that.
"Oh cool, what do you like to read?"
"More importantly, what do you like to listen to?" Sam glared at me and I smirked. These Generation X kids have little to no chance of survival if Zeppelin ain't around so I am taking it upon myself to educate them about the magic of the greatest music of all time, screw those Hollywood rejects and auto-tuned freaks.
