"Societies views

Good morning year 9 , today I will be speaking about society and its views of people and the effects it has on them

Skinny girls are on the cover of almost every teen magazine , social media is filled with unrealistic expectations of people with their sparkling white teeth , clear skin ,perfectly toned abs and stunning figures.

These digitally enhanced photos of "perfection" show young people that to be pretty you have to be skinny and that's not right

We grow up and we're told to love ourself , to accept our flaws and fight our insecurities

But how can we do that when wherever you look these distorted images of "perfection" and "beauty" are being shoved in our faces

10 year olds now are downloading apps for fitness, looking up how to achieve the "perfect figure" and stressing over whether their Instagram is aesthetically pleasing enough

According to the 2017 Dove Global Girls Beauty and Confidence report, 9 in 10 teens in the UK will not spend time with family and friends, participate in activities outside the house, or try out for a team or club if they aren't happy with the way they look.

The report gives evidence to the increasing beauty standards young people seem to face in modern times, particularly with the proliferation of social media within young people's lives.

95% of teens have felt inferior at some point in their lives. Some of the main reasons for this are:

        Appearance
        Size
        Family economic status
        Religion
        Sexual Orientation

Young people are scared to be themselves ,because apparently in 2018 being yourself isn't acceptable , at least that's what society is telling us

Think about this , how many times have you seen someone who isn't considered "skinny" walk down a runway, or model for a popular brand ? Not much , I know

Although some companies have started opening opportunities to people who are different shapes & sizes enough isn't being done

What exactly is this promoting to people?

Rates of depression and anxiety among teenagers have increased by 70 per cent in the past 25 years. The number of children and young people turning up in A&E with a psychiatric condition has more than doubled since 2009 and, in the past three years, hospital admissions for teenagers with eating disorders have also almost doubled.

How has society managed to produce a generation of teenagers in which mental-health problems are so prevalent?

Of course not all of this is down to social media and society but most of it is

Picture this , a young person , walking through town , or logging into their social media or opening a magazine, to be greeted by an ad promoting unhealthy weight loss

A lot of teens look up to these people and try to follow them , but half of these models aren't even a healthy size , so teens are becoming anorexic just so they can be like some model who feasts on the tinniest meals a day or is photoshopped down to unrecognisable

This needs to stop , we need to rid ourselves of these photoshopped fakes because young people are Being brainwashed to not believing that they are totally worthless

And this is all down to the way society views us

no more telling people how they should look , no more telling people how they should act and no more convincing teens photoshopping is a reality

Society has taught people to hate their true beauty , to ignore me or anyone one else who tells them differently, it feeds off our insecurities and uses us for money , you don't need to diet , you don't need to be ashamed and you need to wear make up to feel beautiful

We were born this way and we should be able to embrace it

Thank you"
