Chapter 1 – First Day:
“What do you mean, you haven’t got a job?” I asked, frowning, trying to keep myself calm.
My mother shrugged, taking a sip of her alcohol spiked coffee. “I mean, that I don’t have a job.”
“You couldn’t find one or you just didn’t look?” My voice soft; but inside, anger was bubbling. My mother stared at me for a moment, and I knew that it was pointless to have asked. Of course she hadn’t looked for a job. She never did. She never cared. Just as long as she could pay the bills and buy her alcohol with whatever came from the government, then she’d be fine. “Well I guess we’re just lucky I already got myself a job.” I said calmly.
And I turned on my heel and walked towards the sleeping quarters; sleeping quarters meaning two rooms with two beds in each. Violet shared a room with me, a curtain being the only thing separating our different worlds in the small room. And Valentine shared a room with Daisy, the same fabric curtain dissecting the small room.
Stomping into Valentines part of the room as I stopped at his sleeping figure then grabbed onto the duvet and yanked it off him, mentally pretending that I was a bull fighter, watching for him to charge at me to take back his warmth. Sadly, he didn’t; so I dropped the duvet on the ground and walked up to his head, throwing my hands on my hips.
I poked his head, and he stirred, so I shoved him once. Valentine swatted my hand away so I jumped on his back, jerking him away.
“Holy shit! What do you want?!”
I shrugged, looking down at my brother, “We have to get to school.” And at that, I walked out of the mostly empty room and walked into mine.
We’d been in Florida, Walters – a small city just before Georgia’s border that was fairly forested – for two days now. When we’d gotten home after mum had signed the last of the papers and received the key, we’d spread some sheets on the floor and fallen asleep. But the next day we’d put up the beds.
I promised Daisy that I’d do up her room with the money I earned from my job. I’d paint her side of the room pink, and I’d make her some pretty curtains to put up on her side. I was going to see if I could find a roll of daisy printed wall paper, but if I couldn’t I’d just paint something pretty for her on the walls.
My hands wrapped around a box full of clothes and lifted it onto the paint chipped draws. I opened it and stared at the folded fabric. Dragging out a blue and yellow acrylic Pikachu sweater; old, ripped jeans with a black singlet and my brown, leather cowboy boots from the bottom – I went off to the bathroom.
After having a hot shower, I changed into the fresh clothes and dried my hair with the hair dryer. The brush ran easily through the soft, clean, dry strands of dark and wavy hair that fell effortlessly at me waist. I quickly braided it in a loose plait – shorter hair at the front falling comfortably in my face – and ran into the kitchen to get Daisy who was still in her night gown.
“Do you have your jumper?” I asked as I brushed her honey coloured hair into two loose plaits on either side of her face.
“No,” Daisy said as I tied silky, pink satin ribbons into the ends of the braids.
Smiling, I stood from my crouching position in front of her, “That’s good, because I knitted you a new sweater.”
Daisy quickly ran off to the bedroom, and I followed back slowly. As I entered the room, her small body barged into me like a car, and my legs shook from the impact. Looking down, Daisy grinned up at me with the sweater that I’d knitted for her over her t-shirt. It was made of soft pink acrylic wool with a large, white, five petal flower in the middle.
