Peter can't believe he can be this unlucky. He knows he has the infamous 'Parker' luck, but this is just ridiculous.
"'A field trip,' she says," he mutters under his breath. "'It'll be great,' she says." He turns to Ned and MJ, who are watching him in amusement. "'It's to my own house,' I say. 'It'll be horrible,' I say. You know why?"
Ned raises an eyebrow and MJ rolls her eyes.
"Why, Pete?"
"Because," he starts, frustration boiling under his skin, "my crazy family, emphasis on the crazy, is going to kill me with embarrassment!" He groans, collapsing onto the cold tile of his aunt's counter. "I mean, I love all of them, don't get me wrong, but can you imagine the chaos?"
"Yes, Peter, we've both met your family," MJ sighs, rather exasperated. Peter simply groans.
"Don't worry," Ned says as he pats his friend on the back consolingly. "We'll be there with you."
"Thanks, Ned," the teen says with a smile, but then immediately drops it, "but it's gonna be a nightmare, lemme tell ya."
Ned and MJ share looks, the male seeming as if he's pleading.
"Peter, you're not going to die from this," she says, sighing for the millionth time tonight.
"I might!"
"No you won't."
"I probably will," he huffs. "That'd actually be pretty nice, considering I won't have to deal with this field trip to Stark Industries, the place I freaking live!"
MJ looks to Ned and shrugs, as if she's giving up after one try.
"Peter," Aunt May starts as she enters the kitchen, "do you mind quieting down just a bit? I'm pretty sure the neighbors are this close to filing a complaint."
MJ snorts, rolling her eyes as she opens the book she's been trying to read for the past twenty minutes.
"Sorry, Aunt May..."
"Hey, you know what," Ned starts, stopping MJ from reading once again. She huffs, rolling her eyes.
"What?"
"You could talk to Pepper!" He exclaims, like it'll do any damage. "She could probably talk to some of them."
"And Nat, too," MJ adds. "I mean, she'll embarrass you as much as the rest of them will, but she could probably threaten them, too."
Peter lifts his head, thinking over both of these options before groaning and slapping his face.
"I'm so dead..."
Over the course of the next week, Peter continues to groan about this to his two annoyed friends and Aunt. Eventually, they forcibly take him to Pepper's office, where the woman always lets them stay for a bit.
Pepper looks up from her tablet, raising an eyebrow at the trio.
"Hey, kids," she says, eyeing Peter's reluctance, as she has been for the past week. "Anything the matter?"
"Peter," MJ says forcefully, "would like to talk to you for a moment, right?"
The teenager in question narrows his eyes and grits his teeth before taking a deep breath.
"Yeah, I would, actually," he says, then turns to one of his 'moms'. "Pep, you see, I'm in this...predicament, and was wondering if you could maybe, possibly help me out?" He asks hopefully, eyes practically sparkling.
She raises an eyebrow, glancing at his two friends in amusement.
"Sure, Pete." She sets down her tablet. "Tell me this predicament."
"Well, you see, I'm having this field trip..."
"Okay..."
"And it's to..."
She raises an eyebrow.
"To...?"
"Stark Industries..."
Pepper stares at him for a moment before looking at Ned and MJ once again for confirmation. As soon as they nod, she suppresses a small smile. A second later, she's bursting into laughter, hand held close to her mouth. "Are you serious?"
Peter nods, solemnly.
"Wow, Peter, your 'Parker' luck has really outdone itself this time, huh?"
He sighs, sitting down in one of her chairs.
"Yeah, and I just know they're gonna embarrass me with everything they've got."
Pepper sighs, still smiling brightly. "You're really beat up about this, aren't you?"
Peter simply groans.
MJ and Ned roll their eyes, having become used to it over the past week.
"When is this field trip of yours?"
"Next Friday."
"Well, that gives you some time," she tells him. "Although, I should probably warn you that Shuri and T'challa are going to be here then, as well."
Peter groans louder, burying his face in his hands.
"I should just dig my own grave, shouldn't I?" He asks. "It'll probably say something like 'Here Lies Peter Parker, killed by embarrassment instigated by his own family.'"
"You're being dramatic," MJ huffs, staring down at him as he sinks in the chair, half way out of it already.
He parts his fingers, looking back up at her.
"When am I not?"
"Pete, isn't that a bit long to be put on a gravestone?"
"Shut up, Ned."
"Rude."
"Whatever..."
Pepper watches in amusement, but chooses now to intervene.
"Peter," he looks up at her, "I'll talk to them, I promise."
He grins, jumping up to wrap his arms around her. She laughs.
"You're the best, Pepper!"
"Alright, alright, now you three get outta here," she says, shooing them away. "I'm sure you've got better things to do."
She laughs again as she watches Peter lead his friends out of her office. As she picks her tablet up again, starting to work, she sighs. "I promised I'd talk to them," she murmurs, "I didn't promise it'll work."
Ned and MJ stare at Peter as he enters the bus, seeming miserable as he drags his feet.
"Five bucks says he'll die before the end of the field trip."
"I'm not gonna take that bet, you'll win."
"That's the point."
Ned scoffs.
"What's wrong, Parker?" Flash asks mockingly as he notices the other's state. "Afraid your fake internship will be revealed?"
"Shut up, Flash," Peter mumbles, walking past him. "Shove a--"
"Mr. Parker," Mrs. Field says sternly, eyeing him in disapproval, "need I remind you to be respectful to your classmates?"
Flash smirks at him smugly.
Peter practically sobs.
He slumps into the seat beside Ned and MJ, hands on his face as he lies down.
"This is going to be the worst day ever."
Up front, Abraham grins with delight.
"This is going to be the best day ever!"
Listen closer, and you'll hear Peter's groaning in the back.
