JACK’S POV
I returned to my son’s room after I had eaten something. A man dressed in a white shirt, slacks and a tie was in the room. He stood when I entered and extended his hand to me. He introduced himself as the detective on Quen’s case as we shook hands.
“Now Quentin tells me that you have some information on the shooters. First I’d like to know how you know there was more than one person involved.”
I sit down and the detective did the same. I tell him the same story I told Quen about the man and woman who were responsible for my son and his wife’s injuries. The detective scribbles down pertinent information.
He reads over his notes before speaking. “Well this is a great description of the suspects. Thank you for your help Mr. Fairchild. I’ll get this information out to all the bordering states in case they’ve made a run for it which I’m sure they have.”
He stands and I do as well. We shake hands once again and he tells Quen that he will contact him with any new updates even after his release if need be. He leaves the room and Quen thanks me for my help.
“You don’t have to thank me son. I would do anything for you, I hope you believe me.”
He slowly nods and grabs the remote for the TV. I sit back down and watch my son flip through channels. The room is silent for a while until there was a knock on the door. A nurse entered to check on Quen.
I wait for the young lady to finish up her job and when she leaves I throw a smile in Quen’s direction. “So I’m going to be a grandfather huh?”
Quen’s eyes grew wide at my remark. “How did you find out?”
“I ate in the cafeteria and a few nurses were talking about the situation. They didn’t say your names but how many couples came in here with gunshot wounds? Why didn’t you tell me?”
Quen blows out a breath. “Honestly I didn’t know if I was going to allow you back in my life. I still don’t but I’m willing to take it a day at a time. Of course you know you’ll have to regain my trust but you’re off to a good start.”
I let out a small laugh. “Trust me I know I screwed up in the past but I’ve realized my mistake and I want to be back in your life and I would love to watch my grandchild grow up. I know you’re going to make an amazing father. Hell, maybe you can teach me a thing or two.”
That made Quen laugh but I guess he was still sore because he winced a bit afterwards.
“Are you hoping for a boy or girl?” I ponder.
“As long as my child is healthy I could care less. But then again if it’s a girl any little knucklehead boy trying to get within a foot of her will have hell to pay, especially if she looks like her momma.” Quen smiles.
