I sat on the rotting old dock, gazing into the night sky. The stars glimmered and the moon shone full, casting its bright, beautiful light all across the trees and reflecting across the lake, creating the perfect scene. I let my feet hang over the edge, dipping my toes into the refreshingly cold water. There was no wind; everything was calm and serene. Simply a perfect night. I, not being able to sleep, decided to take in the scenery and listen to the sounds of nature. I gazed into the water at my own reflection.
Suddenly the image became distorted with the movement of the water. The water was no longer still and calm. I looked across the lake to see the cause of the disturbance and saw a strange creature dragging itself out of the water. I watched in awe as the beast’s head turned around and, across the widespread lake, made eye contact with me for a split second, its eyes glowing a shimmering blue-green like the waves of the ocean. Before I could tell what it was it vanished into the bushes without a trace. The water was still again and the creatures of the forest continued singing as if nothing had happened. But I know something had.
Astonished and bewildered, I left the dock as fast as I could, running back into the house. I decided sleeping wasn’t such a bad idea after all.
