"Welcome, Chosen Subjects. You have now entered the rest of your lives."

The smooth, humming voice spoke simply all too familiar words, branded into my memory like a vicious burn mark.

"As you have heard before, you will no longer have any contact with the physical world, nor mentally, spiritually, digitally, or literally. You will now no longer answer to the rules or regulations you have had before. You will now no longer have any personal connections or relationships. You will now no longer have any personal belongings or possessions. You will now no longer believe in or advocate personal beliefs or views."

A heavy, dull silence thrummed through the floors, the walls, the air. It sucked the breath from my lungs; a furious fist slamming into my chest, my ribs caving beneath its force.
I didn't need to look at neither Venna nor Toby to know that they felt the same.
Not a sound was made. Not even a breath.

"You will now listen and follow orders given immediately or under the time span given, or else, there will not be any hesitation to eliminate you at once."

Silence. My throat seemed to twist beneath my skin.

"You will now following the given path to the main common room, where you will receive further instruction and information of the situation you are now within and aware of. If you do not follow the given instruction in the span of two minutes, you will be immediately eliminated. Choose wisely."

The ever so quiet door seemed to open just as an eye; silent, open, wondering. Intriguing. Intimidating.
Even slightly scary.
The soft blue trail, the light that seemed to  thread within the floor; it's glow drawing my eyes to it, like a fish snagged helplessly upon a hook.
Nothing else was said. Just a yawning, empty silence that seemed to echo within the humming chasm within my chest.

For a moment, no one moved. No one breathed. No one dared blink and eye, or twitch a finger, in case they decided to eliminate us before we even had a chance to follow what they had told us.
And then, the trance seemed to release it's freezing grip upon every synapse within my body, loosening just enough for my neck to achingly slowly turn towards the opening of the doorway; the scar that tore open the prison we found ourselves enclosed within.

"Immediate elimination," breathed Toby, his jaw slightly ajar. His voice nearly scared me, emerging so suddenly from the shuddering silence. "They're going to kill us."
His voice was so quiet, so awed and shocked and laced with underlying horror, it was as if he just realized the true weight of the words spoken so calmly to him.
He probably just had.
"It's what they brought us here to do," I murmured, my voice humming through my body. For a moment, it was nearly odd — I hadn't seemed to hear my voice in what appeared to be quite a long time.
