Heart origins

It was a warm Saturday. The sun was setting behind some mountains in the distance, colours were created from the light and they amalgamated together to form the sky above that never seemed to begin or end.

A gentle warm breeze blew on this particular Summer sunset. It was a nice and peaceful day.

However, in one of the silvery lilac coloured tents set up in a field of emerald grass there was a soon to be mother in labour.

The other elves waited in their tents, the air was thick with tension and everyone else was so silent you would be convinced that the tents were empty, except for the tent with the young soon to be mother in it.
Everyone could hear her staggered breathing.
Everyone was anxiously waiting for any kind of news about the woman or child.

Soon, darkness took over the sky as the sun went to sleep and it became night.
Children cautiously stepped out of their tents as stars began to dance in the sky above. The tension never left the air and the children felt almost threatened by it but it wasn't long before they began to laugh, play, dance and chase fireflies together, leaving their worries behind and became care free until a cry of a newborn baby came from inside a tent with a caduceus carved into the wooden support beam at the front.

Everyone froze and awaited some kind of sign that everything was okay. A doctor soon emerged from the tent and spread the news of the newborn child and their overjoyed mother who was physically weak and tired after the birth.

After receiving the news, the tribe decided to hold a party to celebrate the arrival of their new family member. They laughed, danced, played music, played games together and told stories to one another under the night sky and under the gentle watchful gaze of the moon.

However, the mother's mood was quite the opposite to her family's.
Sure, she was overjoyed that she lived to see and meet her now quiet child that slept in her arms peacefully but her heart was beginning to break because of what she had to do next.

The mother leaned over to the back of the tent and tapped it twice, then paused for two moments before tapping it five times. It wasn't long before a young, petite wind spirit, who was wearing a long ripped dress, a shawl and a leather necklace that had things like beads, broken plastic clothes pegs and a few keys, came through the back of the tent wearing an expression full of sadness and a million apologies but they understood that they needed to do this.

The mother, who had tears in her eyes whispered an almost silent 'I love you' to her child and gently kissed their forehead before handing them over to the wind spirit with the strange necklace, she then laid on her side as she watched the wind spirit and her only child leave through the back of the tent.

The woman finally let her tears spill as she took her last few breaths and entered a slumber that she would never wake up from.

The young spirit ran as fast as the wind, or at least as fast as they could with a newborn child in their arms. The spirit weaved in between trees as they tried to reach the nearest city as soon as they could but their lungs burned and ached and their legs were sore.

They thought about giving up on their task but all it took was one glance at the child in their embrace and they shook their previous thoughts out of their head, urging their body to run just a little bit longer, for the future of this child.

Soon, they slowed down as they reached a thin river, the water looked like it was glowing in the moonlight which looked nice with all the fireflies floating around. The spirit appreciated this, it just seemed to distract them from everything and calm them down, allowing them to think clearly.

The little wind spirit smiled to themself before trudging upstream to a wire fence. Even though the fence was in the way it didn't stop the river from flowing through and it wouldn't stop the little wind spirit either.

It wasn't long before they found a hole in the fence that was probably made by teenagers trespassing into the woods, so the little spirit crawled through. They earned themself a few scratches but at least the child seemed didn't seem to be hurt.

The spirit found themself standing in an old train station, it seemed so dead and silent without anyone here.

They rushed over to a nearby bench, not wanting to be here longer than they need to be. The spirit carefully wrapped their shawl around the child and slowly set them down on the bench.

The little spirit backed away slowly before crawling through the wire fence, earning them even more scratches. They glanced back at the child for a moment, reluctantly scurrying into the woods.

It had been a while since the spirit left and the child had gotten cold, lonely and hungry so they did the only thing they felt like they should do. Cry.

They cried for someone. Anyone, to come to them.

And nobody did for a while.

Until a tall, ginger haired girl appeared from the night.
She quickly but cautiously came to the baby.
She held them in her embrace.
She rocked them gently.
She held them close and sang softly to the baby until they calmed down a bit.

Maybe, just maybe, things would be okay.
