Thank you!

Third period, algebra.

The classroom was quiet. The only sounds able to be heard would be the sounds of writing utensils scraping across paper, or the clicking of a calculator, or the clicking of a keyboard coming from the teacher Mrs. Wright.

Everyone was working on the same worksheet filled with polynomials waiting to be solved. I had my mechanical pencil pressed against the worksheet, filling in the answer for number 5.

Only five more problems to go.

People were already handing in their finished worksheets and packing up. I always wondered how they could be so quick to solve these long problems, but I usually just focus on myself so I could eventually finish and pack up.

Minutes went by, and I finally was able to finish my worksheet. I wasn't the least bit stressed about it since I always manage to finish my work in this class. That's what I like about my algebra class. How chill it is. Mrs. Wright never gives us too much work to do, and if there is a lot of problems on the work she gives us, she will only give us a select few to do, and that's what I like.

Anyways, I was about to get up to turn in my worksheet, but a loud popping noise stopped me. It was unlike anything I have ever heard. It could have been a firecracker, or a bottle cap popping off. I didn't want to think of the worst that could happen, until a blood curdling scream followed after that popping noise.

At first everyone went completely silent. Everyone stopped and just stood still. Maybe it was a joke? A prank? Nobody knew how to react at first. This has never happened at our school. Sure, we talked about it. We had drills but nothing serious. Not even a threat.

Nobody could comprehend the fact that it was actually happening, until a voice came over the loudspeaker.

"Everyone, there is a shooter in our presence. This is not a drill."

Mrs. Wright was the first to react after the loudspeaker went off. "Everyone, barricade the door right now!" She ordered.

Everyone started to move. But once was a quiet, calm, classroom is now a panicked, loud classroom. The sounds of desks scraping against the floor, the panicked chatter among students, and the clatter of objects against each other filled the air.

I helped the others by picking up my desk and moving it against the classroom door. Eventually everything was against the door to barricade it. The door was locked, the window covered, and blocked by desks and the teacher's desk. We were now all standing against the wall away from the door so the shooter wouldn't be able to see us. Panicked whispers were among us, I stayed quiet.

"What are we going to do?" One girl asked, Kelly. Her voice was full of terror.

I toned all the voices out and looked over at Mrs. Wright. She looked scared as well. I didn't expect her to seem strong for everyone else in this situation. Who wouldn't be scared? She picked up her phone and had it placed against her ear. I didn't get who she called until she started speaking.

"Hello, yes, I am Mrs. Wright. I am the algebra teacher from HowsWorth high school, and I am currently in room B013. We have been informed that there is a shooter in our school, and we need police here immediately." Her voice was rushed with fear clearly shown in it.

I could barely hear the voice on the other end, but I am sure someone will be coming soon. Will they even make it on time?

Mrs. Wright eventually hung up the phone and looked at all of us. "The police will be here soon... Everything will be fine." She tried to reassure us. She tried to seem calm, I know that, but I know she wasn't calm at all.
