I opened the door to the diner, it was small and only a few people sat at the tables. I had to get away from campus, away from everything for a while and it seemed that this was the only place that campus students wouldn't be at on their Saturday.  Sighing, I took off my sunglasses and sat at one of the tables, I pulled out my laptop and plugged the plug into the wall.

When it finally opened I clicked on email and signed in. I was beginning to like the diner and how quiet it was; when I was at home there was a diner just like this one. I loved going there after school with my friends; it was like a hang out for us and nobody at school came there. Mostly older people came to have a cup of coffee or use the free internet connection for work or something.

Finding this place made me feel like I was closer to home, it was like I never left and I could just hear my friend Molly talking on and on about how she hated politics and how everybody was being charged extra for things that they actually needed. She was the type of person who would go out to rally’s and make signs to protest things that she didn’t believe was right. Her babbling would get annoying at times, but she was a great listener and gave really good advice. I would do anything to have here right now to tell me what to do about April.

April, the person I came here to try to escape and here I am thinking about her and everything else she was doing to me. This girl seemed to be affecting me in every way, physically and mentally. She basically tore my perfect record with that one detention, what college would take me now. I realized that I was getting angry and pushing the keys down hard, I needed to stop thinking about her and that’s just what I’m going to do.

“Mind if I sit?” A voice asked. I looked up to see Tiffany smiling at me. “Sure.” I replied. She sat down in the seat across from me and pulled out a laptop from her bag.

“So, what are you doing off campus?” She asked, while plugging her laptop in.

“Had to get away from it all, I wanted some me time.” I replied.

“Sorry.” She told me.

“It’s fine; you’re actually someone I wouldn’t mind being here with me.” I told her.

After that was said there was an awkward silence. Nice job Brittney, you just had to say that and create some kind of tension with the only friend that you could possibly make. Did you not notice that everyone else was basically embarrassed or hurting you? I mean come on, don’t be such an idiot sometimes, my brain snapped at me. I sighed and started replying to my mom’s email.

Everything’s going great mom, I’ve met so many different people and made a couple of friends. I even found a diner like Shay’s Place here, only it’s not called Shay’s Place. I hope everything’s going well for you guys at home, tell the little monsters I said hi.

Xoxo Love, Brittney.

Right after I hit send the waiter appeared at the table with his notepad and pencil ready to jot things down. “I’ll have a latté and a chocolate cookie, please.” Tiffany told him.

“And you, Miss.” He said turning to me.

“Um… Latté and a glazed donut.”  I told him.

He nodded and left the table. I looked back at my screen and fell into another silence with Tiffany until she spoke up, “What’s the deal with you and April anyways, what did you do?” She asked me. I looked up at her, “It was probably when I spilled my food all over her, weren’t you there?” She shook her head, the waiter came back and placed the coffee on the table, we said thank you. She took a sip before replying, “Nope, I came late, it’s a miracle I even got in this year, this school is so pristine, if you miss registration there are no second chances, I got lucky.”
