Shadow had one mission assigned to him by G.U.N. Infiltrate Dr. Eggman's base and steal whatever documents or files he could find from the evil genius. Why G.U.N needed them, he didn't know. In his current state, Eggman couldn't do anything yet. So the idea of breaking into his base to steal files sounded absolutely ridiculous to the obsidian hedgehog but he didn't question them. After all, this was Eggman they were talking about. Who knew? Maybe he was scheming something and G.U.N. wanted him to find out what it was. Regardless, orders were orders so he would carry them out. However, there was an exception to this mission. He would be going alone. Rogue was completing a different mission somewhere else and wouldn't be back for another week or two. It certainly bothered him. Normally, they'd be going together but it couldn't be helped.

Shadow was walking through the woods. According to G.U.N., Eggman's base was located somewhere in the forest. Where exactly was unknown to him but he continued walking. That was, until a familiar streak of blue blurred past by him before stopping and turning around.

"Heya there, Shads!" Sonic said, greeting him.

Shadow growled at Sonic's use of his made-up nickname. "My name is Shadow." He said, emphasizing his name.

Sonic however rolled his eyes at this. "Whatever you say Shads," He responded, earning a death glare from the obsidian hedgehog. "So what're you doing in this part of the woods?"

"It's none of your business." Shadow said, continuing to walk.

"Waaiiiit," Sonic started, catching up to Shadow. "Are you, by any chance, looking for Eggman's base?"

The silence from the other hedgehog answered Sonic's question. He grinned. "Well, I happen to know where it is! I could show you where it is, provided that you take me along with you!"

Shadow turned around to face Sonic. "This isn't a game, faker. What I'm doing is seriously dangerous."

Sonic's ears flopped down, tears streaking down his face in fake sadness. "P-Please Shads... I-I promise that I won't do anything bad..."

Shadow sighed, a look of defeat crossing his face. "Fine. Whatever. Lead the way but once we get there, you are to remain by my side at all times, understand?"

Sonic saluted. "Yes sir!" He said in a mocking tone.

Shadow rolled his eyes. Oh the misery...

After a couple of minutes of walking and endless jokes from our cobalt hero, Shadow was nearly at the end of his rope. However, secretly, he was grateful for his counterpart's distraction. It took away some stress from his mission and it was appreciated. As they walked, they approached a large building. It was small and well-hidden in the forest. Shadow put a finger to his lips, signaling for Sonic to be quiet. The two of them quietly snuck into the building, walking down one of the hallways.

"For a base, it sure is lame." Sonic said.

"It's too quiet for my liking. Minus your idiotic babbling of course." Shadow grumbled.

Sonic shrugged off the insult, putting his hands behind his head. "Maybe Eggy isn't home."

"We can't let our guard down." Shadow simply replied.

They stopped in front of a door. It was sealed tightly and everything about it screamed "SECRET."

Shadow nodded towards Sonic who moved back. "Chaos Spear!" He yelled, firing bolts of Chaos Energy at the door. Smoke arised and the door was blown to bits at Shadow's gruesome attack.

"Poor thing didn't stand a chance..." Sonic whistled as he stepped inside.

"We're in luck. It seems that this is the main database." Shadow said. He paused and looked around. There really wasn't anything except for a large computer of sorts. He walked towards it, typing something in. "Access granted" the computer spoke. Shadow then inserted a flash drive into it. "Processing... Please wait a moment..." The data then started to process onto the flash drive though it would've taken some time. In the meantime, Shadow walked towards the wall, placing a device on it.

"Whatcha got there Shads?" Sonic asked, walking towards Shadow.

"A bomb." He nonchalantly replied.

"A-A WHAT?!" Sonic screamed. He was then met in the face by a gloved hand.

"Shut up, Faker." Shadow hissed. "They'll hear us!"

Sonic rubbed his cheek, the pain of Shadow's punch residing on his face. "Alright, I'm sorry. But why do you have a bomb on you of all things?!"

Shadow casually shrugged (Because he likes things going boom!) "Because once I finish gathering data, I can't exactly leave any traces of my presence here, nor can I risk leaving any other weapons here, so it'd best to destroy it all while I can. I typically carry these around on a daily basis though. Just in case." He then set the countdown timer on it for 15 minutes. Plenty of time to escape.

"Perks of being an agent..." Sonic muttered. "Just don't get that bomb anywhere near me."

Shadow, however, ignored Sonic. A while later, a beeping sound was made from the computer and he turned to look at it. "Downloading completed." It read. As Shadow removed it, a loud thud was heard and appearing from the doorway was an enormous robot.

"Intruder alert. Destroy." It said in an emotionless voice.

"You ready?!" Shadow yelled.

"On it!" The cobalt hedgehog responded.

The two then curled and launched their signature Spin Attack move, hitting the robot and knocking it over. However, it harmlessly shrugged off the attack before standing up again.

"What now?!" Sonic asked.

Shadow glared at the robot before it extended a mechanical arm towards him.

"Shadow, watch out!" Sonic cried out.

Shadow then snapped out of his thoughts, but it was far too late to escape. He waited to be struck by it but the blow never came. Instead, his counterpart was trapped in the robots hand.

"No!" Shadow shouted. "Let him go, right now!" He fired Chaos Spears at the robots arm but they bounced off, not even a scratch on the robot.

"Shads, listen to me!" Sonic cried out. "You have to get out of here! That bomb is about to explode!"

And he was right. Less than two minutes before it would go off. "But I can't leave you here!" Shadow screamed.

Sonic shook his head. "I'll be fine! I have a plan!"

"But-!"

"Trust me!" Sonic said desperately. "You have to trust me! Please!"

"But are you sure you're going to be okay?!"

"I'm positive... Now go!"

Shadow hesitated before nodding. "Dear Chaos... Please be safe..." He whispered before running out. Tears streaked his face as he ran out of the building.

3...

He kept running. Not daring to look back at that cursed building.

2...

He didn't stop until he was out of the woods and at a place he knew would be out of the bombs reach.

1...

The sound of an explosion rang out as a pillar of fire emerged, seemingly touching the sky. All of Shadow's hopes went with it as the fire started to gradually die down.

He collapsed to the ground, a sobbing mess.

"Why?! Why?! Why do you always leave me behind?! First Maria and now you, Sonic! What's the point in saving me if you're not here with me?! I want you back!"

That one person. That one person who gave his life meaning. That one person who gave him a reason to live after the events on Space Colony ARK. That one person who accepted Shadow for who he was. That one person who Shadow loved. That one person who had died for him. He was gone.
