Spike stared out the window of the Golden Oaks Library. Today was the day. Today he was going to finally get a chance to start over, and so would Twilight.

Today was their very first day of school at Ponyville High School. He was excited, to he sure. Canterlot Charter was... lonely... to say the least. But not today. Not here. Twilight was NOT going to push everyone away again. Her parents may have raised him alongside her, but that didn't mean he would listen if she became self destructive again.

Spike looked at his clock. 4:39. Oh. He had three hours before he had to get up. That was nice.

"Spike! Wake up, Spike!" Came the Singsong voice of his older sister. He groaned and pulled the pillow over his head. He shivered and curled into himself as suddenly the blanket as pulled off the bed.

"Five more minutes!" He moaned groggily.

"Nope!" Said Twilight Sparkle in a chipper voice. "School starts in half an hour. And a certain little Freshie needs to get ready."

Spike groaned again, but relented, and sat up. Twilight stared at him expectantly, but he made no effort to move. She rolled her eyes.

"I guess that's a start." She said, obviously irritated. Inwardly, Spike cheered. Ha! Look how chipper and happy you are now, Twilight.

The seventeen-year-old left the room, and Spike began to get dressed. He threw on a green and purple Vans top, and a pair of green cargo shorts. He combed his green hair, and, for the heck of it, added gel and product to it looked spikey. He chuckled, and pulled on a pair of penguin socks, and slid down the banister of the stairs.

As always, he tried to jump off before he fell off, and, today being no different, he fell off anyway.

"Can't win 'em all, eh Spike?" Came Twilight's sarcastic comment from the kitchen.

"Shut up. Is breakfast edible?" He asked, hoping to annoy her.

It worked. "Shut up. I made cereal." Spike laughed. This was good. Twilight wasn't worried. She wasn't panicking, or freaking out, or lecturing him, or being completely silent.

Maybe she appreciated this second chance, and took it seriously as much as he did.

Spike thought back to Canterlot Prep. He really, really hoped she did.

"Hey Spike?" It was Twinkleshine. "Spike is Twilight okay?" The boy opened the door slightly, the chain still keeping the two locked.

"TS, I don't know. I've told you that fourteen times now."

"Spike, let us in." Colegate said, her voice steady, calm and composed, unlike Twinkleshine's.

"I can't. She made me promise not to."

"SPIKE JOEL SPARKLE." Barked Lemon Hearts. His middle name stung the inside of his ears. "You will open this door and let us see our best friend."

Spike didn't know what to to. He started crying.

"Aww, Lem, look what you did, you made him cry. Shame on you." Said Twinkleshine, sympathetically. Lemon Hearts indeed looked ashamed.

"I'm sorry Spike. It's just, we're really worried about her. Sometimes I forget that she's a bigger part of your life than ours. I forget you care too."

"I'm sorry too." Said Twinkleshine.

"I'm not sorry. I didn't so anything wrong." Said Colegate, sniffing indignantly. Twinklwshine elbowed her. "Sorry." She bit out.

"I'm sorry too. But she made me promise." Spike looked around, and then stepped outside the large flat. "But I'll tell you what happened."

"Oh, thank you, Spike!" Twinkleshine said happily.

"Flash died a few days ago." There was a collective intake of breath. They knew Flash Sentry, Twilight's boyfriend. He was a member of the Coast Guard, only two years older than Twilight and them. Often, he was in no danger, just rescuing ships, and overseeing ports. But sometimes he was in danger. And when he was, it was bad. Pirates, bandits, smugglers, foreign hostile ships.

"We don't know who they were. Three ships. A big red one, and two smaller bluish ones. They attacked. Snipers, poisonous gas, and so many expendable men. They didn't stand a chance. Every man was killed. Flash was the last to die, according to security footage. He took a hundred pounds of explosives of the shelves, and blew up all three ships. He stopped them from coming onto land. He's going to get some dumb metal. I'm sure it will look very fashionable on his grave." Spike said, the last bit came out caustically, and bitter.

The trio of girls stood sullenly for a few moments. No wonder she was being so distant.

Twilight opened the door. Everyone jumped. Tears spilled from her red-from-crying eyes.

"Spike, how could you?" She said, and though her voice was as watery as her eyes, the betrayal was clear.

"Twilight, they needed to know." He said, sounding slightly irritated.

"What? That I'm weak? That I can't handle a simple loss?"

"Twi, we don't think you're weak." Said Lemon Hearts cautiously, as if she was talking to a spooked animal.

"Go Away!" Twilight yelled. "I don't want or need your sympathy or your charity, or friendship. Go away and don't ever come back." The trio all looked hurt. They knew she didn't really mean it, but walked away anyway. Twilight needed time. She needed to adjust, and make sense of her world. And they would wait until she was ready.

Spike turned, and looked up at his woeful sister. "You'd better hope they don't listen to you, Twilight. The last thing you need right now is to be alone."

Twilight stared at him, and then turned and ran to her room.

"Oh, of all the times to be irrational." The green-haired boy said exasperatedly.

Two weeks later, Spike opened the mailbox to find a letter from the President. He opened it hastily, and read it.

"Dear Mr. And Ms. Sparkle. After careful consideration, my sister and I have decided to allow the transfer of your daughter and son. We believe that under the current circumstances, a transfer is what would be best for everyone involved.
I'm terribly sorry to see Twilight and her brother," At this, Spike rolled his eyes. Of course he didn't even get his name mentioned. "Leave Canterlot Prepatory, but considering the events of late, a change of scenery and friends would do both a world of good.
Please feel free to ask any questions. My sister and I would be happy to let Twilight return when she feels ready.
Sincerely, Celestia Faust."

Spike, although mildly irritated about being excluded, smiled.

"Hey Twilight?" He hollered, "I've got some good news for you!"
