Chapter 2

Ruby awoke, she was never so hungry, she arched her back as she stretched. She had no wet food to devour, no mother to cuddle upon, and no father to ignore. "I need to eat" Ruby whimpered, she smelled the air, a tangy sent filled the forest floor "Mouse!" Ruby thought as she fought to stay still, the mouse was walking towards a nutblell on the leaf tail-lengths away, she pounced, the mouse squeaked and tried to run but she bit it once more to finish it off. "This might have to do," she whimpered "I smell it follow," Ruby heard the cats loud and clear, she dived into the nearest shade of brambles, and stayed very still, "There is a kittypet somewhere around here Goldenflower," A cat hissed, in fact, there were two cats, the reeked of dead fish "I do smell it, but do not see it, maybe one crossed by," Goldenflower mewed, "If we see it we shall deal with it then, come back to camp." Ruby could feel the cats gaze, "But Goldenflower we need to get rid of it!" The tabby restated "No we need to stay ahead of it, remember the warrior code?" "But the warrior code says intruders in our camp,-" "But does it say we should kill any cat, or kit who has wondered over our borders?" The tabby shook his head, "right now back to camp,"

Ruby sighed in relief "I could have been killed!" She remained still in the bramble, in case the cats returned, when the cat's mews dropped she slowly came out of the bramble, she looked around.

No Goldenflower...

She looked again,

No tabby,

She cleaned the back of her ear, purring at her bravery, but suddenly there was a crack of a thigh behind her,

"Run!" She ran quickly through the forest dodging many pines, "Come back here!" She heard the raged mew behind her, she looked back the same tabby was chasing her! She turned forward still running when she was on the ledge of a gorge. She turned to face her opponent, the cat was surprised by her sudden bravery but hissed in response "Why are you hunting on RiverClan territory?!" The cat hissed "Sorry! I wanted some food, I've been traveling for three days! I was so hungry!" Ruby said backing up. Rocks fell into the gorge by her paw, she looked back to watch them drop,

Silence...

....

Then drop...

Ruby shivered, The tabby lunged towards Ruby knocking her off the ledge of the gorge, Ruby yowled as light faded to darkness then -Splash!- she was in a fast running river, she yelled "I'm going to drown!", but something grabbed her pelt just before she drowned "What's wrong with you? Your wasting your air on screaming!" Ruby had no time to respond, she was to busy trying to survive "Chin up! Paddle your paws! I'm coming to help you little kit!"

Ruby kept her chin up, and paddled her paws, her whiskers were soaked, but a tug to her pelt lifted her out of the rushing river, the cat gently laced her on the shore, she pressed her paws softly against Ruby's chest, getting all the water from her lungs out, "Hello? Are you okay?" She purred, it was that cat from before...

Goldenflower,

Ruby nodded, she was to weak to respond with a mew, "That's good, you must be that kittypet that Sunfrost and I smelt" she purred, wrapping herself around ruby to warm her, "that must be that cat who knocked me off that ledge!" Ruby hissed silently "I'm Goldenflower, what are you doing out in the forest? Across our border?" Ruby sniffed Goldenflower, she keep this smell for when she might need it later, this was RiverClan sent.
