On everyone's fifteenth birthday, they receive a soulmark that matches their soulmate. The mark itself has to match exactly, but they can appear in different parts of the body (For example, one person has a blue and yellow wave tattoo behind their ear, while their soulmate can have the blue and yellow wave tattoo on their chest). Their soulmate is their perfect match. The person who the world planned for them to be with.

Tyler was always fascinated by the concept of soulmates and marks. From a young age, he observed how much they can affect people's lives. He saw the way his parents ended their relationship. They thought they could make it work without being soulmates, but that wasn't the case. Things came around for his mother, who met her soulmate and married him, but Tyler wasn't sure about his father.
The idea that there was someone perfect out there for him comforted Tyler. He had been counting down the days until his fifteenth birthday for as long as he could remember. There were only two more days, and he was getting antsy.
"Hey Tyler, two more days, right?" McQuaid asked when he got to school. McQuaid already had his soulmark, a red triangle with two black outlines on his neck. He wasn't so fond of it, but Tyler thought it looked cool. It reminded him of a neck tattoo, which interrupted the boy's nerd vibe.
Tyler only nodded in response. Although he was excited, he wasn't sure what to expect. A part of him wanted the red triangle to appear on him too because at least his soulmate would be someone he's comfortable with. However, the larger part of him knew that McQuaid didn't feel that way about Tyler (and Tyler really didn't feel a romantic attraction to McQuaid, either), and McQuaid wanted his mark to match with Emaline's, which seemed to be hidden under her clothes or makeup.
"You're so lucky. I can't believe I have to wait three more months until I get mine," Luke complained. He desperately wanted his soulmark to match Kate's (two cherries on her hipbone), even though it was a bit feminine.

Oliver always hated the idea of soulmates. On the morning of his fifteenth, the small yellow rose soulmark appeared on his left collarbone and he rolled his eyes. He started dating Emaline the next year, even though they weren't soulmates. He didn't think the marks were anything meaningful anyway, and Emaline was sick of looking for her match.
He didn't like anyone telling him what to do, especially a higher power, the universe, or whatever the fuck assigns soulmates. He wanted to make his own decisions. It wasn't a secret that Oliver was attractive. Whenever he wore a loose-fitting shirt he noticed his classmates glancing at it curiously before looking slightly disappointed. He often heard whispers about him and who they thought his soulmate was. (There's no way it's Emaline. They are way too toxic for each other. Ugh, I don't know, but whoever it is they're lucky.)
Oliver wasn't sure what he would do if he met his soulmate. No matter how hard he tried to convince himself he was okay with never finding out, a part of him was still curious about who would be his perfect match. He thought they would probably be an actress he met when he moved to New York.

It was almost fourth period, and Tyler was at his locker when he noticed Kate rushing towards him with panic in her eyes. "Tyler, can you please skip class with me? I really need to talk to you. It's urgent." Normally, he wasn't one to ever skip, but Kate seemed serious so he agreed. They went to the AV room which they knew was empty at the time.
"What's wrong, Kate?" he finally asked. Kate was part of Tyler's friend group and they have all been getting along well. Not to mention, Tyler and McQuaid felt pretty cool having a sophomore friend who was also a girl.
