p.o.v: ella
she was my best friend, i was sitting at the end of the bar watching her talk to the guy that paid for her drink.
"hey ella?" she called to me. her head was on my lap, and i was laid back, picking the dandelions off the grass for her to blow on.
"yeah?" she looked back at me and smiled and proceeded to say, " let's make a pact, if by the time we're thirty and we're not married, you wanna get married?"
my breath hitched when those words left her lips and my hands got clammy, i knew she was joking by the little smile plastered on her face, but it also seemed that she wasn't.
"w-what about when we're twenty five? we'd have to start a family soon, you always said you wanted kids as soon as possible." she laughed at what i said and nodded in agreement.
i remember that so vividly, we made that pact over eight years ago when we were both sixteen. and today was lyra's twenty-fifth birthday, we had gone out to a club to celebrate.
she was calling out my name, she had her hand clutched in the strange guy's hand and he was leading her to the dance floor. i smiled and let her go with the man that should've been me.
i asked the bartender for another beer and turned around to see that man, that tall and charming man, grab her in places i wanted to touch. he danced with her but she wasn't dancing with him. that's the thing about lyra, she's always on her own. if someone saw them you'd think they were dancing together but they weren't.
i brought the cold bottle to my lips and took a big swing of it. i sighed and let the slight buzz get to me, the music getting louder and louder. i closed my eyes, and let more memories of lyra get to me.
"are we really doing this?" we were in our college dorm, it was past two am and we had just finished studying for midterms.
"ella, we have to, you can't be that eighteen year old without any experience." she scooted closer to me and placed her hands on my face. my mouth felt dry and my breathing increased.
i was joking around saying how i'd never had a kiss, saying i'm the only girl on campus who hasn't made out with anyone. and she suggested that she would be my first.
"are you okay with this?" she asked me softly with a concerning look on her face. i widened my eyes slightly and responded with a very weak 'yes'.
with that confirmation done, she closed her eyes and moved in. i quickly shut my eyes and parted my lips. then, i felt her lips, they were on mine, and for a second i didn't do anything. they were just there, existing on a place i always wished they would be.
i grabbed her waist, pulling her in and kissed her back with every fiber of my being. she wrapped her arms around my neck pulling us closer. at that moment i thought to myself, "this is it, i'm finally getting the girl of my dreams" but then she pulled away.
i opened my eyes, not really wanting to. she smiled sweetly with a slight color of pink tinting her cheeks. lyra said i wasn't too bad for my first time. she laughed quietly and said we should go to bed.
i let the disappointment plaster my face freely and i got into my bed, she whispered goodnight and turned off the light.
at that moment, all i wished for was to have her lay in my arms. i wanted to feel her, i wanted to just be able to love her.
but that will never happen, good things don't happen to me. but i should be lucky enough to have her as my best friend.
i opened my eyes again, i scanned the room for her but i couldn't find her. i looked for my phone, but i couldn't find it. "shit", i mumbled under my breath remembering that she had stuck it in her clutch because it kept falling out of my jeans pocket.
i got off the bar stool way too fast, i fell to my hands and knees but i didn't care. i needed to find lyra, i needed to make sure she was okay.
~
i've been across the entire club, i went to the vip section, to the bathrooms, to the pool table area, and even the smoking section. i sat down defeated in the lumpy purple couch next to the door of the over populated club.
i rested my head in my hands and thought of other places she could be.
"hey girl on purple couch!" i raised my head too fast and got light headed, the bartender was waving me down to come to him. i walked over there unsure of what he was going to say.
"are you looking for your friend? i've seen you look around this club for about 20 minutes now." he had his elbows rested on the bar stand waiting for my answer.
i told him that i was looking for her and he told me he saw her leave about 15 minutes ago with the man at the bar. i said thank you and ran out the front door.
as i stepped out the front door, the cold winter weather hit me and i shivered, i held my arms close to me trying to warm myself.
i walked around the parking lot for a while until i found her. i saw her shoes from underneath a car and saw that the man was talking.
"come on sweetie, come back home with me." he was slurring in her ear and she looked uncomfortable but unsure on how to leave. he had his arms barricading her way out. i didn't know what to do, that man was twice both of our sizes and my one class on self defense was years ago.
he placed his liquor tainted lips on her neck, and she tried to push him off but was unable to. she kept yelling for him to stop.
i was trying to remember this move my self defense instructor taught us but i couldn't really remember it. "fuck it", i ran behind the guy and kneed him as hard and i could in his balls and yelled, "run lyra, go to the car!"
she did not hesitate to run the second his lips were off her neck. i ran like hell after lyra, in the direction of my car.
we got in the car both out of breath, and drove off to anywhere that wasn't the club's parking lot.
we ended up getting pancakes and going back to the apartment. we sat down on the floor of the living room and began to eat the slightly soggy breakfast food.
we were eating in silence for a good 10 minutes when lyra spoke up and said, "thank you ella" she smiled with pancakes in her mouth, spilling out a bit. i wiped it off with the thumb and said you're welcome.
"kind of a sucky birthday, i'm sorry, we should've stayed home like you said." i felt terrible that she had to experience that on her birthday.
"don't apologize, it's not like we knew that would happen. besides, you saved me, which was very heroic." i smiled at what she said.
"wait, wait here i'll be right back" i went to the kitchen and looked for something in the drawers. i came back what i was looking for and put it behind my back so lyra wouldn't see.
"what is it?" she asked trying to get a peek of them by trying to look behind me. i told her to turn around and placed them.
when she turned around i was holding a plate with a pancake and a wonky placed candle in the middle of it. she gave me a toothy grin and asked me to sing happy birthday.
"even though i hate singing, i'll do it for you." i sang the song and told her to make a wish. she sat there pretending to think really hard for a bit and then blew out the candle.
