It was April fifteenth, 2035--Chloe's eighteenth birthday, roughly a year after it started. Unfortunately, there were no special plans to celebrate as she had to spend it in the middle of a Costco. She and her closest friend Skyla took it over soon after the infection started. It was really the safest place they could be, with concrete walls and a barricaded door separating them from the zombies. Most people's perception of a zombie is a slow moving creature that's easily killed, but they're wrong. These zombies were different; they were fast, and had skin like thin leather that was hard to shoot through. Within the walls of that Costco, they would be safe.
"Hey, Chloe," Skyla said, poking her friend. "Chloe, Chloe, Chloe, Chloe, Chloe," she repeated over and over, emphasising every time with another poke. Chloe peeked an annoyed eye open and looked at her friend. Skyla looked great, despite having only having four hours of sleep the previous night. Her long, dark brown hair cascaded past her shoulders in waves and tangles, and her normally pale freckled skin was stained with a mix of dirt and blood. Her dark, sapphire blue eyes had faint purple circles around them, but she still managed pull it off with the mascara she was wearing. She wore her normal attire-- tight grey pants, a white tank top, her dark blue leather jacket (just strong enough to deflect a bite), her black combat boots, and the music note ring she had worn since the eighth grade. "Happy birthday," she grinned.
Chloe sighed. "Thanks, Sky," she responded. Chloe and Skyla liked to say they were polar opposites, and they were far from wrong. Chloe had bright blonde hair and icy blue eyes that had lines of silver in them. She was very short, about 5'1, while Skyla seemed to tower over her at 5'8. She wore a lot of mascara and gray-black eyeshadow. Her wardrobe included lots of black--black skinny jeans, black open shoulder shirt, blood red leather jacket, black combat boots. She also wore the emerald ring her father gave her when she was thirteen.
"Was the poking really necessary?" Chloe said with slight irritation. She couldn't be mad at her, though--they'd been friends since diapers.
"Sorry, just excited for you. You only turn eighteen once!" Skyla responded. She shifted awkwardly as Chloe got up, obviously trying to hide something behind her back.
"Please tell me you didn't get me anything."
"What? No, I would never! Me, get you a present for your birthday? After you got me the silencer for my pistol on my eighteenth? It would just make no sense if I got you something!" Sarcasm, Skyla's specialty.
"Alright, fine, just give it to me already! You know I despise waiting," Chloe said as she reached her hand out to get the gift.
"Alright, alright, no need to be greedy!" Skyla countered, purposely moving as slowly as possible. As the gift was slowly revealed, a grin appeared on both of the girls' faces.
"No fucking way! You found this?" Chloe reached out and grabbed the katana from her best friend's hand.
"Yeah, I had to kill a couple zoms for it, but it was worth it. And now you have two! You can look twice as badass, like me!" She pulled out her two pistols to demonstrate.
"Well, why don't we go and sweep the perimeter then?" Chloe asked, purely so she could try out her new weapon.
"Yeah, let me just let the two love birds know," Skyla responded as she started to run to the ladder that lead to the roof. Once she got there she saw them making out instead of watching the ground, and cleared her throat loudly to make her presence known. Both boys sat up immediately and looked at her.
"Shit! Sorry, Skyla, we. . . um. . ." said Sean as he started to stand. He was a tall lean guy with pale Irish-white skin and baby blue eyes, clad in his tight black outfit. He ran a hand through his brown hair, trying to smooth it down. AJ meanwhile just looked at Skyla, relieved she wasn't Chloe.
