One day at school, Jess was bored and had nothing to do. She was then approached by her best friend, Karen.
" Hey Jess. Have you heard about this new social media app call Tweeter? It's really cool. I think you would like it." Karen said. Jess has never had social media because she knows that it takes a lot of responsibility.
"Kare, you know I don't have any social media." Jess says.
"And you know I've been trying to get you on it." Karen says dramatically.
"You know what, for you, I'll do it. You owe me." Jess replies.
"No babes, after you realize how much fun you're going to have, you owe me." Karen says as she walks away. At the same time Karen walks away, Jess goes to the play store on her phone and installs the app.
"I can't believe I'm doing this." Jess thought to herself. Meanwhile, the app installed and she made an account. After she went through the tutorial she figured why not install all the other apps Karen has suggested over the years. She made all of her profiles when she got home. She received a lot of followers and friend requests at first. But then, after posting a questionable picture of herself and Darren, whom is her boyfriend, people started making accusations. She got lots of negative feedback and comments on her posts and people were leaving hate messages left and right.
The one that hurt her the most is that even her old friend from middle school was leaving hate messages. Jess was used to getting hate by people in real life. But on social media is a completely different ball game. She decides to call Darren.
"Hey babe, so I posted a picture of us on Readit and people are calling me all sorts of names and stuff. I don't know what to do." She said.
"Well, I say just block those people." Darren said.
"You don't understand. It's literally everyone everywhere." Jess said.
"Have you tried ignoring it?" Darren questioned.
"Babe, you know I ignore most things." Jess says, astonished that her boyfriend believes that she's not trying to ignore it.
"Well, I don't know what to tell you then. I say just get over it. This won't be the last time you see hate on social media, it's everywhere." Darren said bluntly.
"I- I can't believe you aren't helping me through this." Jess said.
"Well I'm trying to but it seems like there's no way I can help" Darren said.
"You know what. Forget it. And forget us." Jess said.
"Are you breaking up with me?" Darren said in an overwhelmed tone.
"Yes. I am. Because since you can't help me with this you can't help me with anything else important." Jess said as she hangs up. Jess changes her status to single. People immediately respond to this. All negative. Jess can't take it anymore. She decides to turn off her phone for the night and go to bed. She goes to bed crying. When Jess wakes up, she turns on her phone. She is surprised by how many notifications she has gotten. She hesitates on whether she should look or not. She goes to her messages to see a message from Chloe. It says,
"I'm not surprised you and Darren broke up. Maybe if you're lucky everyone else will leave just like your mom did." Chloe was always mean to Jess. Jess can't believe what she just read. It hits her like a rock and a hard place. She decides no one likes her and there's no reason to live. She grabs a bottle of pills from the medicine cabinet and starts live streaming on UToob. She waits for at least 11 people to join the stream. She opens the bottle and eats the pills like candy.
"This is what you all wanted." Jess says as tears slide down her cheeks. TIme goes by and Jess collapses on the floor. Her breathe stops. This is what you all wanted is her last words, and her last thoughts as she lay on the floor. Breathless. Finally feeling free from the world.
