When I wake up the room is dark and I'm engulfed in a blanket, which I assume my mum put on me. I lift my head off my bed, and I can see a faint outline of a person curled up next to me. I recognize the long, dark brown hair, Cara. It's dark outside with the exception of the faint glow of a street lamp. As I get up, the blanket falls to the floor and I sleepily stumble towards the door. The door opens with a loud creak and I turn back to see if it had awoken Cara. She is still sound asleep.

I step into the pitch black hallway and,as quietly as I can, I walk to the stairs. As I trot down the steps, they emit a soft creak. I trip and land on the floor with a loud thud. I quickly hear the shattering of a vase that was knocked off of a nearby end table. Still on the floor, I bite down on my hand as if not to scream. The front door is quickly opened and closed with a loud slam. I wait a couple seconds to make sure the intruder has left before I stand to my feet.

Suddenly I hear someone rush down the hall. " Jess, are you okay?" Cara asks in a raspy voice, evidence that she has just woken up. " Yeah, I'm fine." I say, taking a deep swallow. " What was that noise? Was it the door that slammed? Who left?" The questions just kept falling out of her mouth as if they were the first things she thought of. I honestly had know idea who was in my house and why, but I'm too scared to find out, or even move for that matter. My hand is sliding up and down my opposite arm. I furrow my brow out of rage, sadness, or fear. I can't even figure out my emotions right now, they're everywhere, I'm a hot mess.

" Jess?" Cara's voice cracks. I slowly turn to face her. She tightly wraps her arms around me, squeezing softly. I wrap my arms around her shoulder blades and lay my head on her shoulder. As if she could tell I was afraid, sometimes she knows my emotions better than I do. " Do you know who it was?" Her voice hoarse from crying. " I don't know who it was, but I do know it was a man." She pushed me away, still having hold of my shoulders. All the colour had drained from her face, and she looked terrified.
