"Come on, loser. Where do you think you're going?" I yelled at the skinny sixth grader cowering in front of me as I flipped the water in my hand around. "You think you can run away from me? Huh?"
"Come on, man. We're going to be late for the dumb Mars dude," One of my friends, Gil, said, sighing in disappointment.
"Fine." I turned away from the younger kid, sneering, and walked with Gil and another one of my friends, Chase, to homeroom.
We didn't bother stopping at our lockers because our teacher was going to be too distracted to care and it was a waste of time.
We walked into our homeroom, and I spotted Harper, the girl I want to be my girlfriend, talking to Will. Will was gay; he had come out a few weeks ago. I knew he had expected me to, but I couldn't bring myself to tease him when I secretly found him cute.
No, I do not like him. I argued with myself, shaking my head to clear my head.
I sat down in my seat. All thoughts of talking to Harper faded as I tried to stop glancing at Will as the Mars newscast began.
"Today is a day that people will remember for centuries to come. Today is the day that man sets foot on Mars for the first time. Today could change the course of history. It all rests on the shoulders of the line astronaut on this expedition. Neil Fitzgerald Rickman. He has been in space for almost a year, by himself. He has had no contact with anyone, not even his friends or family, but NASA mission control." The woman on the TV reported, causing everyone, even me, to smile excitedly.
I was almost giggling I was so excited. Most people wouldn't expect me to find this kind of stuff interesting. My friends would probably call me lame is they found out I though the Mars mission was cool. My dad would flip out.
Lots of people just expect me to like hot girls and sports. I like to think I have more depth then that, although I am pretty cocky. I mean, I am richer than everyone in this school combined. Just saying. And I have had more girlfriends than anyone.
I was so busy trying to contain my fanboying that I missed some of what the reporter was saying.
Oh well. I'll just watch it again at home, I sighed.
"Neil Rickman is about to make touchdown. 3........2.......1!!! And he's down!!!! Oh. Here he comes! He's about to step off the ladder."
As Rickman stepped off of the latter, the air temperature dropped and I got intense shivers.
I stared intently at the screen, trying to see as everything went fuzzy and dark.
