You sling your bag off your shoulder and place it on the couch and switch on the TV, you weren't necessarily going to watch it, living on your own the noise was comforting.
Walking over to the kitchen you start to make food, ravenous after a long day of work. You are a veterinary surgeon, you've always loved animals since you were young so it was your dream job to look after them. As you finish making a large bowl of food there's a news flash on TV that catches your attention, you walk over to the living space and perch yourself in the edge of the sofa, eating and watching.
The Secretary of State is on a podium, "as the world is aware we live among, what we call 'Enhanced individuals'. I, the Secretary of State have set a registration in place. Now the government can identify and keep a watchful eye on their activities, so we do not have a repeat of the devastation that was brought upon New York, Washington DC and Sokovia."
As he is finished speaking there's a loud cheer from the crowd. He walks away from the podium and the footage cuts back to the news reporters.
"I suppose that's a good thing?" you say to yourself, "but then again if there is a list full of Enhanced and it falls into the wrong hands that could mean trouble for all of them. They save the world and this is the way the government treats them?"
Before it can make you angrier you switch the TV off with the remote.
You look down at your now empty bowl of food and get up from your sofa, placing the bowl in the kitchen sink you head to the bedroom. You have a small balcony joined to your bedroom, just big enough to fit a small table and chair. You open one of the doors just enough to let a cool breeze into the room. You place a small bowl of food on the table."I hope you come visit tonight," you whisper to yourself.
You turn round and head to the bathroom to switch on the shower, as the water runs you take off your clothes and think how you are going to spend your weekend off work. Once the shower is at the right temperature you jump in gently washing your (hair colour) and (hair length), moving onto your body you lather up your favorite body wash and scrub the days troubles away. Showers were one of your favorite things, just feeling the warm water on your face, forgetting the world for a few moments.
"(Y/N) are you still awake?" his voice brought you back to reality.
Upon hearing him you get out of the shower and dressed into baggy sweat pants and a tank top. You walk over to the balcony towel drying your hair as you do.
"Heyyyy" you say smiling.
The raven looks up at you then hops to the bird seed that you had left for him. He gladly pecks away looking thankful as he does. You glance over to the clock on your bedside table '23.30'.
"I'm gonna get some sleep" you tell the raven.
He carries on feeding his hunger. After towel drying your hair as much as you can you get into bed growing more tired by the minute. The raven then flies up to your free pillow and nestles himself into a comfortable seated position. You remove your right arm from under the covers and gently stroke him from head to tail.
"I hope the government never finds us," you say to the raven, recalling the images from the TV.
"As do i," he replies into your thoughts.
And with that you drift off to sleep.
Your usually a heavy sleeper even having the balcony door open on your New York apartment doesn't stir you from your sleep. The noise from the street below is faint as your apartment is on the 23rd floor.
You begin to dream of when you were younger, 12 years old, playing on your own because you didn't fit in with the other kids. You sit on the side lines watching the rest of them play, hoping that one day they would invite you to join in. As you sat picking at the grass around you, you notice a raven in the trees.
"I wish I was like you, then I could fly far away from here," you thought to the bird, "to not have a care in the world, no school, no bullies."
The raven looks in your direction as if understanding your every thought. He swoops down from the tree and lands a few feet away never taking his charcoal black eyes off you.
"Well this is strange," you hear someone say.
You look around, there's no one near you. You look at the raven.
"Did you just -?" you began.
"Speak to you?" the raven interjected.
"Apparently you can hear me, but a human has never done such a thing before," his voice in your head was old worldly, like he was from another era.
You sat frozen in your place eyes wide, you couldn't believe what you were hearing, what you were doing.
Soon enough you pluck up the courage to ask, "do you have a name?"
"Corax" he replies, "call me Corax," he said proudly.
"Nice to meet you I'm (Y/N)," you reply thoughtfully, still in disbelief at the whole situation.
"Well (Y/N) I think this will be the start of a wonderful friendship."
Your dream continues to retell the story of that day 12 years ago, until a door slamming jolts you up from your sleep.
You glance over to the balcony door that is still in its position from when you opened it earlier that night. You look at the clock '3.15'. Your heart sinks as you hear voices in the front room. You look over to Corax who is already awake and alert, "I will go, stay quiet," he tells you.
You nod at him as he flies towards your living room, he doesn't enter but keeps his distance enough for him to see the 4 men in black tactical suits embossed with a red logo. He flies back to you and perches on the head board.
"It's Hydra," he whispers to your thoughts.
"Do not make a sound, hide in your bathroom until I can think of a plan."
As he said those final words you place both feet on the floor praying to not make a sound.
!BANG!
The noise startled Corax his instincts flew him out of the balcony doors.
The sound was familiar to the one that woke you from your sleep, a door slamming. You have no time to think where it was coming from and you make a break for it and run towards the bathroom, as you turn around to lock the door you see a figure zip line down onto your balcony just as Corax left."Damn it, please don't see me, please don't see me," you whisper to yourself behind the locked door.
Suddenly all you can here is gunfire and screams.
"There here," you hear someone shout.
Gunfire continues to fill the apartment and sounds that you can only imagine are people being punched, kicked and flung about spill into the bedroom.
"Go get her before they do!" one stranger exclaimed.
You stood frightened to your core just looking at the slither of light from your bathroom door.
!ARRRRRGG!
!THUD!
Someone had just been thrown into your bathroom door with such force it had dented the door inwards but still locked.
You slowly start to back up to the other side of the bathroom never taking your eyes off the door. Silence fills your ears, and your heart begins to race.!BANG!
The door is kicked from its hinges landing centimeters from you. A tall shadowy figure stands in the door way. You are terrified.
"She's in here," the man shouts in a gruff voice.
You then here what sounds to be two sets of foot steps coming towards you.
You look at the figure in the door way hoping he can see the desperation in your eyes but never moving from your place.
