Delay

It had seemed as though they would die fighting an intergalactic war. Without any contact from their home planet, the five human paladins would often think about the people and fond memories they left behind.

Time passed by quickly in space, or at least it seemed that way. Being able to read a clock, and the ability to tell the time began to matter less and less. All there was to do was fight in the name of freedom.

Truly, they stopped counting after multiple years. Birthdays were remembered and celebrated with the help of sturdily programmed and everlasting technology developed by Voltron's green paladin.

Those days of joy were to die for. They renewed the fire in the mission to relieve the universe.

Finally, after countless tiring and destructive battles, the end of the great space war approached; bringing with it the graceful promise of peace.

Every being in alliance with Voltron could feel the day approaching.

And soon that day did come. To say that the people of the universe were ready to begin anew was an understatement.

With the formal surrender and steady dismantle of the Galran empire, each passing moment became enriched with the longing for home. Of course that would have to wait, for their victory came at a price.

The former red paladin had long since been promoted to leader, but that position had not been happily received. The moment Shiro went missing was pure pain for him, and the amount of times he would look for the man he felt was still his leader was uncountable.

Finding Shiro again was the biggest relief of his life, even if it did nearly cost him it.

Putting the former black paladin into the castle's healing pods was a guarantee to preserve his life until he was in a better shape. As it was now, he was incredibly worse for wear.

The raven haired paladin, Voltron's more hotheaded leader, wanted to take Shiro home. But he remembered the man's treatment the first time he reappeared on Earth. The night he crashed into the Arizona desert in an alien ship. The night Garrison officials nearly put him under for the torture he had to endure.

A second dissappearance, plus four vanished Garrison cadets and a dropout was a spell for disaster.

Even so, the need for the planet they left behind was overrunning any sound logical thought. It would be a shame to not see it after everything they fought for.

With his mind made up, Keith announced his hopeful declaration with a smile.

With a clap of his hands to bring everyone to attention, he faced them all happily. After bringing them down, he clenched his fists at his side, feeling their focus run though him as he fed their need for their long awaited reward.

"Alright eveyone...We're going home."

His voice carried through the main chamber where the team first met. Everyone was either seated or standing, making exited conversations in whispered tones.

The hurried whispers intensified and then stopped.

Instead the buzzing happiness turned itself into a group hug. The four human paladins embraced each other with a fortitude to rival the oppressors that they had been fighting against for years. The smiles and laughter mixed in with their tears.

With the excitement dying down again, the team's alien princess took the stage.

"Actually Paladins." Allura started slowly, " I believe it would be best if you stay in the castle."

She paused to walk closer to the group, cloudlike hair escaping the do it was captured in.

Allura wrung her hands together, rubbing her wrists. It wasn't absolutely certain that the Paladins would be on board with her plan, especially since their job was supposedly done.

"The castle's pods have been pre-programmed to open automatically, should we receive a distress signal or should Shiro heal completely."

The team's jokester, who was ever so relieved to finally have the chance to go back home, saw the value of Allura's proposition.

Despite his desires, his time fighting the war had led him to feed his selflessness.

"Yeah Keith, that way if someone needs help we won't be fighting bad guys in space wheel chairs." Lance said.

The paladin with raven hair exhaled through their nose.

'Of, course' he thought, the sigh turning into a breathy laugh.

The comment was unecessarry, but not unexpected.

He could see how doing so would be useful.

They'd just defeated the Galra Empire- otherwise formerly known as the largest threat to the universe and its citizens.

It wasn't unlikely that someone would try to rebuild it.

Whether from vengeance, or for personal profit and gains.

If they'd left for Earth during such an unstable time, anyone zelous enough, Galra or not, could attempt to take over again; to force everyone and everything back under tyrannic rule.

"Alright Allura, we'll stay in the castle."
He decided, the aura of a leader surrounding him.

"But if Shiro gets better and no one is in danger, the rest of the paladins, as well as my mom and I are going back home."

Keith looked at her; then threw his gaze to Coran. The redheaded Altean met his eyes to smile back at him, grateful for all his fight, all the effort he and his team had been willing to put forth for the sake of the universe.

"And you're welcome to join us if you want."
