Sor-Lenck, as part of his oath, shortened his name to Lenck.  Sor-Lenck was a noble family name among the Islanders, so when he chose to be called by the mage name of Lenck, he felt he was also renouncing his claim to any title or position among them.  When the Emissary sailed to report back to the king that the negotiations had been successful, he promised to explain the boy's choice to his father.   four Sessailaine Warships accompanied the three Islander vessels as an honour guard, with Arve, one of the Council Elders accompanying the Emissary to bring Biort's greetings and formalize the treaty.

Lenck had proven an apt pupil but in keeping with Aeronwyn's desire that magic be dedicated to mercy and healing first, Lenck's first lessons after crafting a mage light were with Cadeyrn. Injuries, minor and major, as well as sicknesses were not uncommon among the Sessailaine.  Cadeyrn travelled from the main village to the outlying ones and even took Lenck to the new colony.  Cadeyrn enjoyed describing the look of utter astonishment on Lenck's face when he realized the 'birds' were people with wings!

Aeronwyn had met with all the mages prior to Lenck's oath taking and they had agreed to support her vision for the Mage Guild.  "It makes sense," Moiril had summed up, "because that is what a gift should do. It should benefit others."   Due to the practical need for Jerrill to remain and help raise his growing family, Aeronwyn had sent Moiril and Keri on the first 'recruiting' mission.  Since the Sessailaine had such close ties with Forsyth, they decided to start there.  The hall would easily hold a hundred people, with the only limitation being food.  A garden was started to grow greens and Biort convinced the council to supply meats and fish as recompense for the healing work the mages did.  Actually, they were going to give them the meats and fish but Aeronwyn insisted that fair trade take place.

Of course Cadeyrn pouted when Moiril sailed off on the Nereus without him.  Thugard slapped his shoulder as Cadeyrn departed the ship before she sailed and told him he would get over it.  The laughter of the crew at Cadeyrn's expense just made him pout harder.  Being busy and being the first Master to teach their skills to an Apprentice Mage helped pull him out of his mood quickly.

The Nereus was due back any day, so Cadeyrn was down at the dock looking out to sea at least twice a day, hoping to see a sail.  Part of the training of a mage, Aeronwyn decided, was speech craft. "We may be asked to be diplomats, or solve disputes as an uninvolved third party. We need to learn as the healers of the Western Kingdom do matters of law, history and speech.  Not all mage craft will be magic!"   As a result, Lenck was under Jerrill's instruction for a half-day once a week to learn how to tell stories and speak like a bard.

As with all apprentices in all halls, there were also chores.  With so few in the hall, they shared the cooking and cleaning, leading to a comment from Cadeyrn that a few more apprentices to do dishes might nice!  Meanwhile, Aeronwyn was considering how to obtain the expertise in law and history they would need to insure the mages were broadly educated.  Biort offered her help, which Aeronwyn gratefully accepted, but she wanted more than just Sessailaine law.  She wanted it all. What I wouldn't give for Parner to be here!

The Healers Guild was trained in law as they often were cast in the role of judging disputes.  Aeronwyn hoped the Mages would be able to be seen in a similar light.  For that to happen, they had to have knowledge.  One advantage that the Mages had was that writing was not forbidden nor was learning to read.  Aeronwyn not only encouraged it but had figured out a way to make a kind of paper from a tall plant that grew wild.  Using dyes as ink and feathers as pens, she had began teaching twice a week.  Those classes were open to all and quickly filled up with Sessailaine children whose parents realized the advantages of the skill.
