She was alone.  Once she had been a goddess and worshipped but then a hunger set in and worship was no longer enough.  Craving something more, she found a way to inhabit the bodies of those who would allow her in.  She discovered that she could, for a short time, satisfy her insatiable hunger by engaging in the pleasures of the flesh while using her power to enhance them beyond measure. Of course, it burnt out the shell she was in, usually driving them mad if it didn't kill them outright, but what did she care?  She had thousands who begged her to bless them with her indwelling presence.

Then she felt the terrible spell begin.  Having been a goddess she immediately recognized the intention of the magic and the power behind it.  There was no choice.  She surrendered almost all of the power she had to the spell retaining only enough of herself to remain who she was.  Even that she scattered to the wind, willing herself to draw back together, to resume, only when the spell was gone and it was safe.  She knew that once she was herself again she could inhabit whoever of her followers had survived and steal back the magic that she had lost.  It was too bad that her greatest follower, the King himself, would not survive.  She had poured too much magic into him, granting him almost unlimited powers and strength in order to destroy his Queen.

She had intended him to rule the world so she could have an unlimited supply of flesh to feed her hunger. The spell pulled all of her magic from him and without that magic he could not survive. Too bad, she laughed.  The spell was strong but it could not destroy someone who was once a goddess.  When it was gone she began to will herself back together.  Little bits of her coalesced from all over the world, from stone and seed, from the wind and waves.  Finally, she felt strong enough to search for one her vessels.

She found none. Not one? Surely one survived? She searched and realized a terrible truth.  The spell was gone but so was the world she knew.  How long? How long have I waited? Herself again, she searched the stars and discovered that she had been waiting not the few years she had expected, but aeons.  None of her worshippers could have survived more than a few decades, never mind thousands of years!  As she searched she realized something else too. The Old Gods are gone!  Trapped by their own spell! If she had a voice, the laughter would have frightened anyone who heard it.

I am alone!  They wanted to destroy me, kill me, rob me of my pleasures. Now they are trapped and I am free!  All I need is one. One person to see me for who I am and let me join with them and I can begin anew!  It didn't take her long.  A lonely boy, cruel hearted, who sought revenge on his friends and family for perceived wrongs.  It would take time but she had time.  She had no adversaries left who might oppose her!  Touching his mind with her thoughts, she began to whisper of revenge and power and one who might make his dreams come true.
