Emma fumbled around the kitchen as prepared dinner for Owen. He would be home from work soon, this was the first week he had returned. She felt horrible for keeping him up at night, and considered this to be an apology. She stuck her slender finger into the pot of freshly whipped mashed potatoes, humming as she enjoyed the flavor in her mouth.
She peered down at Roscoe who had been in her presence while she prepared for the meal. "Mhm. I think I just found my craving." She told the shepherd dog as she rubbed her stomach. "Good job, baby." She placed the pot of mashed potatoes on the back burner of the small stove, being careful for it to not take up much room.
She couldn't wait to get her new house finished. A bigger stove would be necessary since cooking seemed to mask the trauma of what she had been through. "What else should we have? Broccoli? Asparagus?" She beckoned our towards Roscoe as she moseyed over to the fridge to see what they had.
Her lips pursed themselves into a frown as she continued to look at the half empty fridge. "No broccoli or asparagus, bud." Her voice seemed to echo within the fridge.
The coolness of it felt comforting to her. It was better than the humid air that lingered within the house. Even Roscoe stood close to the open fridge to stay cool.
She reached her hand into the back corner of the top shelf of the fridge, wrapping her fingers around the large clump of overly green lettuce. She gazed at it for a moment, inspecting the few wilting leaves which she determined she would toss out of the mix of greens instead of throwing the whole head of lettuce away.
Her eyes scanned the side of the fridge where the condiments were kept, rolling them as she found the only salad dressing in the fridge. "Ranch? Really?" She hissed as she plucked it from its spot. "Your grandfather sucks at shopping."
Alan had been doing most of the shopping for them. Buying what he deemed was healthy for her and the baby and not getting anything leisurely like a Swiss Cake Roll or Oreos. Apparently broccoli wasn't on the list of healthy foods for Emma, nor was balsamic vinegarette.
Usually Alan would prepare the food but tonight her father was spending quality time with Kate and wouldn't be home for a while. It took her some time to convince him that she would be fine on her own and that if she felt threatened to call him right away.
She sighed as she thought of the conversation she had with him earlier in the week. Would she stay on the island or should she go back to the mainland? She made the decision to stay with Owen on Isla Nublar, hoping that one day she could return to work with Felix and the tyrannosaur.
She had begun to miss her work friends. Especially Felix, her partner, who had stopped by a couple times to check in on her and give her reports on how Rexie was doing.
She wasn't handling it like a champ like she usually would brush off a fight. This time it had taken a toll on her. Felix stated that she had become more lethargic each day he had visited her. It was only a matter of time before Emma and Felix would be given the code to the nursery to bring in a new infant tyrannosaur.
Emma hoped she would be able to see Rexie before she passed. Emma shuddered as an image of Rexie being brutally attacked by the Diablous raked through her mind. The sudden feeling of being alone made her uneasy once again.
There was a creaking sound that came from the living room, startling her. Her heart was fluttering as she turned around to see nothing.
The floors of the bungalow always creaked on their own but it was enough to fool her that someone was there. Though she kept reminding her father that she would be fine, she had yet to convince herself.
