The hallways became a lot more gruesome as we continued on through the building.
The white floors were stained red, bodies literally littered the floor like garbage. Decapitated heads and other body parts laid next to their bodies, blood pooled beneath them. Bloody handprints decorated the walls, some sliding down as the person was killed, splatters of it were on the walls like paint, and blood slowly dripped form different spots on the ceiling.
“This is way worse than I thought…!” Al gasped with shock.
“The news was right about the deaths…” I mumbled mostly to myself.
Riley looked around, he was even patting the corpses.
“Riley!” I hissed at him. “Show some respect for them! They were killed!”
Riley ignored me and continued patting down. After a long minute he gave a “Ha” noise and held up a card. It was a second I.D. card, and on it said it was for a “Dr. Kyle Grey”.
“We need this,” Riley insisted. “There are just so many places my I.D. card will take me, but this card will give us all access.” He kept his card and the new card together, he held them tightly in his hand, just in case they were needed.
I had my hands to my mouth as we walked through the bloody hallways, ready to stifle any gasps of horror. Riley was right about the card though, without it we would never have been able to access a restricted area. He slid the card through and when the door opened, both Riley and Al had to cover my mouth with their hands because I had screamed so loud.
Bodies hung from the ceiling, blood dripping, so very slowly, down and making small puddles beneath. They didn’t hang themselves, no. They were hanged by their own intestines, their stomachs ripped open, similar to my mother’s, and their own organs were used to hang them. Their hair was torn out, leaving the scalps torn and bloody, and their faces were shredded beyond recognition.
“What could have done this…!?” I gasped in horror. I looked at Riley. “What room is this supposed to be?” I demanded.
“A research room I think…” Riley guessed. “This is where I believe they do research on top projects, maybe including the virus.”
Al observed the corpses. “And what reason could be that theses deaths are much more gruesome then the others we have seen?” he questioned.
Riley shrugged. “How the fuck should I know?” he retorted.
A loud roar then erupted from somewhere inside the building. It was loud and low, terrifying to even the most dangerous of predator animals. Yet… it sounded familiar. I had heard it before I discovered my mother dead.
“We need to get out of here!” I screamed.
“Not after coming so far for that damn research!” Riley shouted at me. “Even you had said you wanted to come here, don’t be such a baby, Jennette!”
I then turned around, no longer facing the gruesome scene. “Fine then…” I replied sternly as I ran out of the room. I hated it when Riley did this to me… he always makes me feel so stupid and so useless. Why do older brothers do that? To make themselves better or to protect younger siblings? Well, that sure doesn’t work. Behind me I heard both Riley and Al call my name, but I ignored them.
Hearing a second roar made me shiver and gave me the instinct to run faster. Running is what I did, I never looked back, I didn’t go through doors, I didn’t even notice that some corpses began standing up with moans. All I did was run… running away from the horrible thing that had possibly killed my mother.
