14 years ago – In the courtroom...
"Both parties have reached an agreement?" Judge Wilkins inquired.
"Yes, your Honor," confirmed the attorneys.
"A DNA test conducted before and after the child's birth verified with 99.99% certainty that Rexford Oliver Trent, Jr. is the father of Riley Victoria Trent. The mother, Claire Mary Rosemount, has agreed to waive all parental rights to the child. Is this correct, Ms. Rosemount?"
"Yep. That's it!" She responded, popping her 'P' like a defiant child. "And don't forget my settlement, your Honor."
"The terms and settlement have been agreed upon and documented. Ms. Rosemount, exploiting a child for financial gain is unacceptable. You've manipulated a child, Mr. Trent, and brought an innocent life into this world. You're now an adult, facing severe consequences for your actions."
Claire seemed unfazed, focused solely on the money. Judge Wilkins turned to me. "Son, at 15, you've embraced a tremendous responsibility. Though supported, fatherhood poses challenges. Promise me, I won't see you back in family court?"
"You won't, sir. I assure you," I replied, beaming, knowing I had my family and friends by my side.
"Court is adjourned!" The gavel struck, marking the end.
Exiting the courtroom, I picked up my daughter, ready for Thanksgiving in vibrant fall colors.
"At least I know one thing," Claire smirked, "I make cute babies."
Avoiding her, I transferred the money as per the agreement. "Goodbye, Claire."
10 years ago – Farewell...
"Mr. Trent, she had multiple IDs, making her identification unclear. We found drugs and paraphernalia in her purse and the apartment," the man informed me as I identified her body.
"Claire Mary Rosemount," I confirmed. She no longer resembled the person I once knew; the drugs had taken their toll. I requested a toxicology report and left.
This was our final farewell to Claire. With no family present, only a few of us attended her burial. The Priest concluded the ceremony as we stood quietly.
"Is that lady my mommy?" Riley innocently asked.
I nodded, explaining the good things about her. Her true story would wait until she was older.
Afterward, life resumed for us. Claire took the last hour of our lives, but we moved forward.
