prologue.
"Are you ready sweetheart?" Liz asked her son. He looked up at his mother and sighed, "Yeah. Let's go."
When Liz told Luke that the mental institution accepted him, he didn't do anything. He didn't know what to do either. He had mixed emotions about the whole thing, but he didn't have the energy to yell at his mum for putting him in there, so he just nodded after standing still and not showing any type of emotion for a couple of seconds.
Luke stepped out of the car and slammed the door shut. Liz didn't say anything like she usually did. She understood that this was tough for Luke. Being eighteen and having to stay at a mental institution.
He opened the door again after slamming it shut because he had forgotten about his packing.
Luke grabbed his bag and slammed the door shut, again. He threw it over his left shoulder and started walking into the institution, Liz behind him.
They eventually came in, and Liz walked to the desk, telling the woman Luke's name and the reason for being there. Luke looked around and took in his surroundings. This was just a big hallway filled with people with different issues. Handicapped people, cancer patients, people who looked kind of normal to him. But you never know, since a smile can hide thousands of things. Something, or someone, caught his eye, though. It was a boy. A boy with really dark brown hair and a scruff. The boy stared at Luke, and Luke felt quite uncomfortable.
The boy with the dark brown hair stood up and calmly walked over to Luke.
"Hello, I'm Michael." the boy said and smiled.
"Hi," Luke said slowly. "I'm-"
"Luke, I filled out the papers and stuff, and I only have ten minutes to say goodbye," Liz said quickly. She looked like she was about to cry.
"Ah, nevermind, your mum answered my question," Michael chuckled. He looked at Liz and put his hand out for her to shake. "Hello, I'm Michael."
Liz tiredly smiled at Michael and shook his hand. "Nice to meet you, Michael. I'm Liz."
Liz bid her goodbye's to Luke, tears falling from her eyes and staining her cheeks.
"So what's it like here?" Luke asked Michael whilst walking to his room, or their room. Michael apparently sat in the hallway because his doctor had told him to take care of Luke, showing him to their room, telling him about school and what they did everyday. Their schedule, you could say.
"Horrible." Michael replied, looking at Luke flashing him a genuine smile. Luke didn't understand why Michael had given him a genuine smile after saying this hospital was horrible, it didn't make any sense to him.
"What?" Luke whisper-yelled and furrowed his eyebrows.
"Yeah, I'm serious. Don't ask why, or how, because I can't explain, and you'll notice later on. But it's worse than people think. The people here, the patients that is, keeps you sane."
Luke still didn't understand. He'd just have to wait and see.
