I stared through the clear window, watching the trees wistfully pass by. I sighed. Leaving home was never something I thought I'd ever do.
"So where you from kid?" I focused back in the car and looked towards the driver.
"What?" I asked. I saw his smile in the rear view mirror.
"Where are you from?" He asked a little more clearly.
"Um... C- California..." I told him. He scoffed.
"California huh? What are you doing all the way in Iowa?" He asked. I sighed louder.
"Just... getting out of the city." I said lying."Yeah I get that. I love the country. It's peaceful, quiet, no one too bother yah." I trailed off as he started babbling. Nodding too every sentence he said. My mind traveled to different parts of my thoughts. I thought about a lot of stuff. Mostly about what told me too leave. That was the big mystery.
I saw a hitchhiker in a trench coat pass by. At least I thought he was a hitchhiker. But one, he wasn't holding his thumb out, and two, he was wearing a trench coat. That seemed a little odd. I've never seen someone hitchhike while wearing a trench coat. And a weird thing, he stared at me. He just stared as we passed by him. I didn't think too much of it. Until I saw him again. It had been a minute, but I saw a guy in a trench coat, staring at me straight in the eyes. I straightened up to get a better look. I shook my head and looked back out the window. I was probably just being crazy. But that wasn't it either. Until I saw him a third time, standing in a trench coat. Staring at me straight in the eyes as we drove by.
"Um... sir?" I asked, interrupting his words.
"Hm?"
"Are the windows tinted?"
"Uh... I think so. Probably a little. I'm not sure, why?" He asked.
"Could someone look at you in the eyes?"
"Uh... Maybe. Depends. They can't really see your eyes but they could probably see your silhouette." Needless to say, I was pretty freaked out. After about 20 minutes, I was calmed down, and I had pretty much forgotten about that hitchhiker. Needless to say, I was relaxed for the first time in about a month.
But that time was quickly over, when I started feeling a slight burn on the back of my left shoulder. I thought it was the sun, so I shifted, trying to get to a cooler spot. But the burning sensation was still there. It felt like when you hover your hand about a ½ an inch above a flaming hot burner. Suddenly I was in some of the worst pain I've ever been in my life. I felt a searing pain on the same spot, I screamed for a second but I stopped when the guy looked at me. I was gritting my teeth. I smiled awkwardly and slowly pulled the little window up. I groaned quietly as I touched the spot where it was burning. Geez it hurt like crazy. I couldn't see it cause of the angle, but I told myself that I would check at the hotel. Which I totally forgot to do.
We eventually got to my hotel. I paid the driver and walked into the lobby, I checked in and went to my room on the top floor. I sat my suitcase on the bed and sat down. I anxiously ran my fingers through my hair. What in the world am I doing? I heard my phone ring. I answered a facetime call.
"Hey Tess." I said.
"Hey." Tess replied. "How are you?" I shrugged.
"Good I guess. Not much has happened." We were both silent.
"Where you staying tonight?" I smiled.
"You know I can't tell you that." I said sadly. She sighed.
"I know..."
"So how is everyone?" I asked.
"Good. I mean, other than you leaving, everyone is ok I think." I nodded.
"That's good." We were both silent again.
"Hey... Um... Do you know about anyone looking for you?"
"What?" I asked.
"Some guy should up at your house asking for you." My eyes widened.
"What?" I asked, becoming more concerned.
"Yeah..." She told me. "Three guys actually..." She mumbled.
"WHAT?" I yelled. "Who?!" I said.
"Three guys! I don't know their names, well I know one I think, but one should up at your house, one at my house, and one at your sisters bar. And all three of them said they were FBI."
"FBI?! I don't need the FBI on my tail! I don't need this! Why am I even out here?!" She shrugged.
"Ask yourself." I flopped onto my bed and groaned.
"Why is this happening...". I sighed and sat back up. "What did they look like?" I told her, trying to be calm. She thought for a second.
"Ok so, the one who showed up at your sisters bar, she said, and I quote, 'he kind of looked like a male model, he had golden brown hair, and super deep green eyes, and he was about 6 2 or so.' That's what she told me."
"Alright, did she say his name?"
"Uh... Dean? I think?"
"Ok...". I said. "What about the other two?" She sighed.
"The one that showed up at my house was super tall, he had longish brown hair. And the guy that showed up at your house, he was at least like 5 10 or so, he had black hair, blue eyes, and he was wearing a trench coat-". I cut her off.
"A what?"
"A trench coat." I had a sudden realization that hit me like a brick.
"Oh crap." I said.
"What?"
"They know where I am. Or one of them does...".
"What?!" She yelled. "How?"
"I don't know! I was in my uber on my way over here and for some reason this guy was standing on the side of the road, and at first I thought it was a hitchhiker, but one, he was wearing a trench coat, and two, he was staring at me straight in the eye!"
"He's probably just a hitchhiker." She told me.
"That's what I thought! But what kind of hitchhiker, hitches a ride on the side of the freeway?!"
"He was on the freeway?" I nodded. She sighed looking for something to say that could possibly comfort me. "Yeah I got nothing. Sorry."
"Ahh! Why is this happening?!" I fell back onto the bed and covered my face with my hands.
"Just stay calm. It's not like they could know your exact location, right?" I sighed.
"Yeah... you're probably right. I mean, how would they know where my hotel is?" Tess smiled.
"Yeah! And how would they know what town your staying in?"
"Exactly! Thanks Tess this is helping. I don't know why I was freaking out so much. I'm gonna be fine-". I stopped when I looked out the window and saw the most horrifying thing. "Hey tess?" I said, trying to stay calm but internally freaking out.
"Yeah?" She asked, not noticing anything.
"What did those two guys look like again?" I said, freaking out a little more.
"Um... one was really tall, brown hair, side burns, the other was shorter, blondish and brownish hair. And the other had black hair and a trench coat. Why?" I swallowed.
"They found me..."
