Here's 13films I just really want to recommend to people (all except for one are from the 2010s but who gives a fuck about that). I've become a bit of a film geek lately (follow me on Letterboxd: ryethebread).
LOVESONG (2016, DIR. SO YONG KIM)
I love this movie. It's about a young woman in a struggling marriage with a young daughter and she goes on an impromptu road trip with her best friend. On the trip, the young woman and her best friend's relationship deepens. It's so beautifully made, features a great performance from Riley Keough (who is one of my current celeb crushes) and has a really lovely story. My only flaw is that I wish the ending was different (no spoilers).
TULLY (2018, DIR. JASON REITMAN)
Tully is quite possibly one of the most realistic depictions of motherhood on film. Charlize Theron plays Marlo, a mother who has her unplanned third child and is struggling to deal with her children, including her son who has a development disorder that doctors have been unable to diagnose. She gets a night nanny after her brother recommends it and in arrives Tully, played by Mackenzie Davis. The two woman have a bond that helps Marlo deal with her children and being a mother. There is a twist though in the film and I highly recommend NOT finding out what said twist is as it's really good (I kind of knew what it was going in but I feel like I might have enjoyed it a little more if I didn't know what the twist is).
THE FLORIDA PROJECT (2017, DIR. SEAN BAKER)
I 100% believe that The Florida Project should have been nominated for so many more things at the 2018 Academy Awards (it only got nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Willem Dafoe, who should have won), possibly even getting a Best Picture nod. There's just something so beautiful and magical about this film and I'm hoping to see Brooklynn Prince (the young lead of the film) go far.
SHORT TERM 12 (2013, DIR. DESTIN CRETTON)
A lot of people say that Brie Larson's best performance is in Room (it did win her a Best Actress Oscar) but I gotta admit, I love this performance way more (she is really good in Room). Short Term 12 also includes Rami Malek, Stephanie Beatriz, John Gallagher Jr and Lakeith Stanfield so there are plenty of recognisable faces. The titular location of the film is a group home for troubled teens with Brie Larson's character Grace dealing with a lot of her own issues.
DOPE (2015, DIR. RICK FAMUYIWA)
