"SAKURA-CHAN! What happened to you?!" Naruto screeches.
I see him looking at me, eyes traveling up and down in astonishment. I feel extremely anxious; my face is caked and my skirt is too short. I search for Ino, meeting her eyes. Silently, I plead for her to help. Despite our rivalry, and although I'd never admit this out loud, she is and has always been my best friend.
Ino's nostrils flare as she exaggerates anger, picking up on my mayday signal. "Billboard brow, why didn't you call us?!" she exclaims. "We waited outside your house for twenty minutes!"
Smiling uncomfortably, I reply, "Gomen everyone. My parents recently moved so my mom could be closer to her business—I travel by the subway now. I also changed my number recently."
I didn't dare tell them I changed my number because I just needed to be alone and unbothered during the summer; I didn't need them to see me obsessively exercising and losing weight.
I see Sasuke from my peripheral vision, but never divert my eyes towards him. I can't let him think I'm still his fangirl. High school will mark a change in me for the better, both physically and mentally.
I soften my face. "Now, lets go and figure out our homerooms?"
