Over a week has gone by since my night with Thad and I sleep peacefully, no longer plagued by dreams of the bouncer. I awake one night, well rested and in the mood to take the children out. I get dressed and search for Elias and Sabrina. One of the best things about the fall is that it gets dark earlier and I am able to take them out for a few hours without arousing suspicion.
I find Sabrina in her room. She is listening to her MP3 player; dancing around the room and singing along. I stand there for a bit just watching her. She spins around and sees me standing in the doorway. “Oh hi, mommy. I didn’t hear you come in.”
“I came to see if you would like to go out tonight.” Her eyes light up. She loves going out and can’t wait for the day that she is big enough to do so without an escort.
“Sure! Where are we going?”
“I thought maybe you and Elias might like to go ice skating in Central Park. Why don’t you get ready while I go look for him?”
“Okay, thank you mommy.” She runs to me, almost toppling me over and gives me a big hug.
I give her a kiss on the forehead and leave her to get dressed. Down the hall, I knock on the door to Elias’ room. There is no response, so I open the door a crack, find it is empty and continue my search in the living room, but he isn’t there either. I finally find him in the den playing video games.
“Hey little man, there you are. I was coming to see if you wanted to go ice skating tonight.”
“Eh, I don’t know.”
“Come on. How often do you get to go out? You can go back to playing your video games when we return.”
“Alright,” he grumbles. He gets up and sulks on the way to his room. It is always a mission to get Elias away from his gadgets, but once I do, we always manage to have a good time.
“Jessica.” I wait a few moments but don’t hear a reply. “Jessica!”
“You called ma’am?” she finally answers, coming into the room.
“Yes, please tell Nigel that we will be going to Central Park this evening.” And I will need you to get Sabrina’s and Elias’ ice skates.”
“So the children will be joining you this evening?” Jessica is not always the sharpest tool in the shed.
“Yes, Jessica.” Sometimes dealing with her can be tiresome and I’m not in the mood for foolish questions this evening.
