When you sit and watch people a around you talk, just blah, blah, blah all day, it gets irritating. Especially when no matter how hard you try, you cannot seem to speak yourself. You want to make noise, you want to have those dumb words and sounds come out of your mouth but they just don’t seem to make it.

You get sad, of course. You long for that capability. Most people don’t realize how lucky they are. To be able to walk, talk, see, hear. They don’t realize that what they think is normal can actually be what a person wants the most.

Other than the fact that I can’t talk, I’m a perfectly healthy teenage boy. I never have any health issues, aside from the occasional cold. To most people, that comes across as a shock. Apparently, if you have some sort of disability, you’re supposed to be always sick. Deathly sick? I don’t understand it. Our bodies adjust to the missing sense and become stronger than others.

The one thing people like to ask me, is why I am mute. I was born mute, I suppose. I never learned how to talk. The doctors say it’s a disability, but other than that, I’m normal.

Enough about me, let’s get on with the story.

This day was my first day of highschool. Well, in a public highschool. My mom had homeschooled me for as long as I could remember. She was afraid of what the other kids would think of me, what they would do. This year, though, was my senior year, and I wanted to go to a public school for my final school year.

Eventually, after spending the summer practically begging. She let me do it. We went and got me registered, and for the rest of that summer, I was studying, reading, and doing everything I could to start the year off great. As you could imagine, I was excited.

That morning, I woke up bright and early, eagerly getting ready in my favorite outfit, and helping my mom with breakfast for my sisters. They came down confused, never before seen someone so excited to go to school. I couldn’t sit still, I kept tapping my foot, lolling my head, and smiling.

My mood obviously got everyone else in a good mood too, because by the time their bus got here, they too were all pepped up and happy.

By the time I got to school, I was so excited I could barely keep my mouth shut, I was humming, and making the small noises I knew how to make. I was like a child, excited to see his family, or getting a new toy.

As I walked to my first class, I smiled at anyone I made eye contact with. I sat down, front row, smiling and eager. I then remembered the note I was supposed to give to my teachers. So, standing, I happily made my way to the back of the room to the teacher’s desk. By that point more and more people were filing in to the small classroom. I cleared my throat to get the teacher’s attention.

“Yeah, what do you want?” The teacher asked, not looking up from his computer.

I made another noise, trying to get him to look at the note.

“What? Just speak.” He said again, louder this time. Students were starting to look, some whispering, others snickering. That was the final straw, I opened my mouth and squeaked, he turned around that time, looking at the note.

He took it, reading over it quickly, “Oh, I’m sorry. Go on ahead.”

I sighed, turning on my heel and heading back to my seat, before one kid stuck his foot out, and tripped me. I fell onto my elbows, and pain shot through my body. I cringed, standing up and glaring at him.

I couldn’t glare for long, because he didn’t look like the type of kid to do that. He apologized over and over, his eyes sorrowful.

“I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to do that.” He said quickly, gathering up the stuff that had fallen onto the floor. I waved him off, accepting his apology and writing on a fresh sheet of paper “its fine.”

After that class, I had about 2 more classes with the boy. I couldn’t keep my eyes off of him. He had curly brown hair, green eyes, and a cute smile. He also seemed to be the nerd of the school, sitting alone at lunch, and working alone in class.

The next day, I decided to stop being a pussy and actually talk to him. So, when lunch came around, I joined him at his table. It felt like the entire world had their eyes on us, as I took my seat across from him.

He smiled at me, waving and apologizing again. He was cute when he was flustered. I pulled out my notebook I used for answering questions and wrote out, “Hey, it’s cool. I’m Louis, by the way.”

He read and answered “I’m Harry, thanks for sitting with me.”

“No problem, Harry. Why do you sit alone?” I wrote out, an interested look on my face.

“Oh, Um..—“

Before he would continue, someone came up and dumped a plate of spaghetti over his head, laughing as they walked away, “That’s why.”

I frowned, glaring at the boys as they took a seat three tables down.

“Aw, mute has a crush on Styles.” They yelled out, laughing as if that was funny. I shook my head, “Don’t listen to them, they’re being ridiculous and immature.”

“I know.” He sighed, “You should probably leave before something happens to you too.”

I shook my head no, planting myself in the seat and crossing my arms.

He laughed, “Alright, Louis.”
