1. Family

I stretch my arms as I walk down the hall, spices and seasonings flooding my nose. I hum in appreciation. No one can cook as good as my mother. She always knew just how much seasoning her dishes needed. With our sensitive sense of smell and taste it was a bit difficult to eat foods that were too salty or sweet. My mother made it just right.

I let out a small sound in amusement. My thoughts reminded me of the book of Little Red Riding Hood. Father use to always read it to me when I was little. Now, he reads it to my little brother.

"Love, could you go check on Johnny? He's being awfully quiet."

I mutter an 'okay' to my mother before heading outside where my little brother, Johnny, was playing on the playground set my parents bought him for his 5th birthday three years ago. He loved it and played on it almost everyday. My mom even had to put a child lock on the back door to make sure he wouldn't sneak out at night and play. It was risky to be out after the sun set.

I smile, leaning on the doorway as I watch him slide down and go on the monkey bars. His soft brown hair flies around from the wind, but it doesn't bother him, it only makes him happier.

He was someone I would protect with my life. I wouldn't let anyone or anything hurt him. He was too precious; the innocence in a world full of evil.

"Dinners ready!"

Johnny doesn't pay mind to my mother as he continues to play. I roll my eyes. He was always caught up in his own world. "Johnny." I call softly, but loud enough for him to hear.

Stopping what he's doing, he looks at me, "What?"

I nod towards the kitchen, "Dinners ready." My tone firm and final. He knew when I used this tone that he shouldn't - and couldn't argue. I could've just said it more kindly, but I knew he would try to retaliate. He always did when it came to his playground.

He frowns, "Okay." He trudges into the house and I go to follow when the sound of a broken twig catches my attention. My head swivels towards the sound with narrowed eyes. It sounded fairly close.

I sniff the air and growl threateningly at the faint sour smell. Rogues. Those dirty mutts were close to where Johnny was playing. Fear sets in. T-They could've -

"Sweetheart, you okay?" A hand rests on my shoulder and the fear splits.

Rogues were hated by almost every pack in the state. Two out of seven packs weren't as hateful, but they still did not tolerate their presence. We were one of the two, which was why rogues always dared to cross our territory. That and the fact that my Alpha was not as strict on them as I would like him to be.

"Mom, I smelled a rogue. It was nearby where Johnny was." Surprisingly my tone never wavered. The thought of something happening to my little brother made my hairs stand stiff and wolf alert; ready to pounce if necessary.

Her sharp intake of breath let's me know she heard my words, "I'll contact Alpha Gavin. Come inside and eat before it gets cold." I oblige hesitantly, her voice holding no space to argue.

'We should go hunt it down. And kill it.' My wolf growls, thirsting for blood.

No, right now we have to worry about food. I'm hungry and we need to stay. Johnny might feel something is wrong.

That was the thing about my little brother that stumped me. He was able to sense if something is wrong or if someone isn't feeling well. It was a bit weird at times when he would call us out on it. Other times if he felt that way about the other pack members he would use me as an ear to listen to his concerns before going up to them and trying to make them laugh or smile. He's been that way since he was just a pup, crying at the top of his lungs when he felt someone going through difficult times. My mother and I tend to call him the family sympathizer, but in the back of our minds we knew it wasn't that simple.

I sit down next to Johnny who's scarfing down the food. He sees me looking and smiles. I smile uneasily, hoping it was enough but his head tilts and I know he's about to question me.

The door closing catches his attention instead and I sigh in relief. "I'm home my wonderful family."

A genuine smile reaches my face when my father comes to view, hair messy and eyes light. The feeling of safety sets in my chest at the sight of him. He was our protector; right beside my mother.

"Daddy!" My father places a kiss on Johnny's head before placing one on mine. It didn't bother me. I loved receiving his affections even though I'm old enough to have my own family.

He smells the aroma of food and smiles, "Oh yes. Just in time." I laugh when he rubs his hands together with a hungry look in his eyes.

"You only come home when it's convenient for you, you scavenger." My mom says with an eye roll as she walks back into the dining room. I knew she had just informed Alpha Gavin of the rogue. I just wonder what his next move will be.

'We should check around ourselves.' I ignore my wolf, blocking her out to fully enjoy their company. I could worry about rogues later.

When my father sets his gray eyes on my mother the hunger turns carnal. Eyes running down her curvy figure in a sadistic manner that makes her narrow her eyes but I take note of the blush on her cheeks. The sight of it makes me smirk. "You look ravishing, my mate."

As much as I disliked when my parents showed their affections I couldn't help but notice and feel the pull of their bond. The sight of the mate bond was entrancing and it never seemed to dim between my parents. It always left a feeling of awe and envy inside my chest.

"Eat." She orders and he sits with a small laugh.

We start eating our dinner and the warmth in my chest grows. This was my family. I'd protect them with all that I am.

Hello :) nice to see you. I know this is a short chapter. I'm still not very good at developing a story (which I believe I should know by now, unless it's just me :p). The next few chapters should be longer, but all in all I will be keeping my chapters shorter than normal just to keep things a bit interesting.
