Chapter 1: Allison
Rose was silently driving the streets. She radiated anger. An all consuming anger, I could see by the way she was gripping the wheel. Her knuckles were white. I felt guilty being here. Dragging her down with me. Dragging her into a world that neither of us knew of. I would mess up. I was doomed to mess everything up. I knew that. And so did she. For the last two hours, we had driven in silence. Lost in our own thoughts. But after all that time, thinking en being stuck in my own head, I had to say something.
'I am so sorry, Rose.' I said careful. I didn't dare look at her.
'What?'
'I'm sorry, okay,' I said again, 'I didn't mean to drag you with me into this whole situation. I don't know what they were thinking.' Then there was silence again.
'I know this is hopeless, especially if I help. I always mess up one way or another. I remember this one time when I was with my brother-'
'Please stop talking, I'm going to get a headache from you.'
'Oh right, sorry.'
'Also stop apologizing. It is not your fault... Well not completely.' Now she looked even more annoyed than before.
Great. Now she even hates me more. I turned in my seat and looked outside the window. That just made me sad. Looking at all the trees where birds lived who were free. Sometimes I wished I was as free as them.
Rose saw my misery and softened.
'Hey Allison, It's going to be okay. I will look for the information that we need, you don't have to de anything if you don't want to. Just make sure to not get into any trouble, you know, not get to many problems.'
Even greater. Being send on a mission, a very important one may I add, and the only thing I have tot do is not do anything. One day, I will rule an entire land and be a queen and the only thing I can do now is not draw attention. Maybe it is for the best.
'Can I ask a stupid question?'
She laughed, 'There are no stupid questions, only if a stupid person asks them. And you are not a stupid person.'
'So where are we going exactly? I mean, I know it is a school, but why? Why that school? There are so many places where we could find the Humans. I don't think a bunch of 17 year olds could help us.' This was something I was working on the last hour, but still couldn't find an answer.
'Because it is the most important school off the Human world.' She simply said. 'The director is Jack Adams, he is very important in their government, also a friend of the president. You're going to have to wacht out for him. Very clever man.'
If that wasn't sickening enough, she continued. 'He trains the students to be strong and ready to take an important position into the war. Every kid you see is going to be a general, counselor or spy. they are thought te be brighter, stronger and faster than us, not that that is going te happen.'
A world at war, where children were being raised to be monsters. How did we end up like this? Humans waning us gone, not accepting that we are different. We were the Others. A flaw in humanity that would take over the world if the Humans did not attack us first. I have lived my life in this world. Always afraid for the people I loved. Hoping for them to come back from the battlefield.
'You also have to know that he has a son.' Rose continued. 'His name is Will. He is our age.'
I tried to take all the information in. made sure to remember it all. 'So we have to go in that school, joining the people who are being thought how to kill us. Who know everything about us, who hate us. I mean, we did take their planet after all.'
'They won't recognize us, You're lucky that your eyes have a normal colour, please keep it that way. We blend in, we look the samen they are the same age so to them, we are two new promising students.'
The rest of our drive, we kept talking about Humans. I was happy we found something to talk about. I had a certain admiration for Rose. How could she keep herself cool with this. She was as old as I was but so much more experienced.
But there was only one way now.
Forward.
