Clément: “What?” I stared him incredulously. “The spear controls the wasps.” Vance Darkwile repeated. “You see the tip of the spear? That’s the remote control for the molecular growth machine. And whatever is affected by the machine has microscopic probes sent into its central nervous system that allow it to be controlled by whoever has the remote. The giant wasps, the Hornetians… even me. We can all be forced to do your bidding.” “You?” “Yes!” Darkwile said, “Tigervespa transferred some of his brain probes into me when he gave me this virus. And why do you think the ‘Spear of Souls’ was able to instantly weaken him during that ‘Duel of the Fearless’ thing: because it controls him. And do you know what else it can do? It can make the brain probes send out a corrosive agent into the bloodstream that destroys all wasp tissue… That means it can instantly kill any hornet or Hornetian. AND IT CAN CURE ME! But soon it might be too late. Give me the spear so I can cure myself before these cursed Hornetian parts become too integrated with my body systems. Please!” “Can it control DinoVespa?” I asked. “No!” “But you said it control the giant wasps.” “Not her! Why, she’s too big. She grew, but the probes inside of her didn’t” “But I can control the other wasps, right?” “Yes!” Darkwile said exasperated. I had an idea now. “So, could I use the spear to control every wasp on the island to attack DinoVespa at once?” I asked. “Yes…” said Darkwile, rubbing his forehead, “But first—” I didn’t let him finish.
I was running to the place right before DinoVespa, looking at the spear tip as I went. There was a button labeled ‘omnidirectional’. I pressed it and pointed the spear at DinoVespa. The crystal shined with a brilliant emerald light. With its compound eyes, the monstrous wasp must have seen a million green stars, and it stared at me and snarled. “Yes DinoVespa the Great!” I called to it. “Look at me! This spear has the power to defeat you and I will use it!” DinoVespa arched its thorax and swung its great stinger. It stopped inches from my face. I continued, in an effort to distract DinoVespa. “Go ahead! Sting me! See what this spear will do then! It’s your own funeral!” I heard a great buzzing, and it wasn’t DinoVespa. From the directions of the nest and the Hornetian village came multitudes of the wasps and the Hornetians respectively. They flew at their champion as one, the wasps stinging and the Hornetians stabbing with spears. They were under the command of the Spear of Souls, and until I stopped pointing it at DinoVespa, they would not relent. “It’s working Louis!” I shouted, “See Amy? You won’t get devoured after all!”
The attacking insectoids formed groups to pry off DinoVespa’s armor. It roared and thrashed about. It rolled over and squashed several of its assailants, but in the process impaled its wings on the trees in Terror Valley. MegaVespa suddenly swooped down and drove its stinger deep into DinoVespa’s weak underside. DinoVespa’s stinger tried in vain to stab the attackers, but ShadowVespa burst from the ground, grabbed a fellow wasp, and shoved it onto the giant stinger. ShadowVespa twisted the impaled wasp into a clump and used it to bend the giant stinger to the point of breaking. It snapped off and fell into Terror Valley. Next, several Hornetians took their spears and drove them into DinoVespa’s eyes, robbing the giant hornet of sight. As they did this, I heard a groan to the right.
There was Darkwile struggling to stop himself from flying off to attack DinoVespa. His wasp parts were obeying the command of the spear, but his original human anatomy was rebelling. He clung to a root as his wings tried to lift him away. “Stop it!” he sputtered savagely. “Lower the spear!” But I kept it pointed at DinoVespa. Darkwile cursed at me, lost his grip, and flew off to attack it. By now, the hornets had succeeded in removing most of DinoVespa’s legs. The titanic beast rolled around Terror Valley helplessly, crushing trees and shaking the earth. MegaVespa swooped down and braced itself against DinoVespa’s thorax. Unleashing all its strength in one motion, it ripped off the great beast’s head. In turn, I pointed the Spear of Souls in the direction of the wasp nest and the Hornetian village and the insectoids returned to their respective homes. Amy appeared at my side. “I guess Dr. Darkwile got carried to the village.” She said. “Yep” I replied, “And since he’s still part human, there’s no telling what they’ll do to him.” Louis walked up to us. “Now… how will we get home?” He asked. “Well,” I said, looking at the Spear of Souls, “we can ride wasps.”
