The wind whistles against the castle, slapping it's forces onto the bricks. Rain slashes down, bringing it's fury onto the moat and lakes. The land and sea are always lovers, but today in the midst of storm they are particularly passionate. They flirt with each other, rocky beaches spilling into crashing gray waves until you can't tell which is which.
Inside the towering monstrosity of a castle wails a baby. Pitiful and sad, it does nothing to battle the thunder outside. "Can't you hush her up?" scolds a woman. She is stately and elegant, her dark red lips pressed tight.
"We're trying." whispers another woman. She is plain and simple, her brown hair upswept behind a white bonnet. Cradled in her arms is a pink bundle of blankets. As she tilts her arms to rock the bundle, the fabric flies aside to reveal the source of the wails. A baby's face, drawn tight and as pink as the blankets. The mouth opens into a heart-tugging wail, her dark eyes pressing together.
The first woman scoffs and smooths her distinguished royal blue gown. "You will be sure to silence her. We cannot have the possibility of the Shadow finding her. You know that. It's at this time the Shadow is most powerful." The woman glares, her flashing eyes as gray as the storm outside.
The second woman supresses a soft sigh. "Of course, Your Majesty." She sweeps into a low bow before the first woman, who straightens at the words of Your Majesty. Her proud features relax a little and she tucks a strand of jet black hair back into her beautiful braided bun.
"You will do well to respect your Queen... And your future Princess." The first woman draws herself up to her towering height, her arched brows creeping onto a haughty forehead. Her ringed fingers gesture towards the baby.
"Of course, Your Majesty." murmurs the second woman. She dips into another low curtsy, her head nearly brushing the floor.
The first woman, the Queen, turns to the narrow window. A single bolt of lightning strikes not very far away, illuminating the tired, grim frown that lines her face. "The Shadow grows stronger. We will have to send her away..." Her fingers press against the cold glass of the window, her low murmurs spoken into herself and nearly lost in the storm.
"Pardon, Your Majesty?" The other woman stammers, setting the baby into a cradle.
The Queen turns, raising her chin high. "You heard nothing. I speak only to myself!" She snaps. With a flurry of dark cloth, she flutters out the door and down the dark hallway.
After the door snaps shut, the baby begins to wail once more. "Oh, shh... Shh..." The second woman whispers. She picks the baby up and begins to rock her gently, whispering hushing noises under her breath.
"It will be alright... Princess Melanie."
