The man in front of me seemed to be looking at me, but I could not fully tell. His eyes were unfocused and he seemed to be waiting for me to make some sort of sound. I waited until he lost interest and turned his back to me before shoving my fist on the back of his neck. The force of my blow cracked his neck, and he fell to the ground with an audible thump.
I knew the sound of his neck breaking and the thump to the ground would attract more of them so I quickly moved away from the area, keeping a lookout for more.
I glanced down at my fist. A punch like that would have broken my hand. But now, there isn't even evidence I just killed that thing. I know I described him as a human, but he wasn't human any longer.
I live in New York City, a place that once was full of light and life. But that was many years ago. The year is 2700 AD. All that is left of that time is the towering skyscrapers and the lonely streets. The once lively city is now abandoned, save for the mutants crawling around.
Based on all the innovation that occurred centuries ago, the world I now live in should be much more advanced. That is not the case. I have heard rumors about what happened to everyone on earth, but nothing concrete. The few survivors I now live with only know what was passed down from word of mouth, and that was only a story. But I can tell you here.
As I said before, the world was growing, and fast, and scientists needed a way to keep up. So a group in central Europe tried to find a way to allow humans to communicate with animals and insects mentally. An injection had to be administered to the human and the animal or insect. It contained the drug made by the scientists as well as the blood of the animal or human. At first, the experiments were proving to work. The tests came back positive, and humans seemed to be able to hear the animals speaking inside their heads. But this came at a cost to the animals as well as the humans. The animals seemed to grow older at a faster rate, dying from old age within a few days. The humans developed a keen sense of smell and hearing, which scientists thought was a good thing.
After a few years, almost everyone in Europe had a taste of this new development. It seemed to allow humans the ability to hear animals speak into their mind, as well as giving them heightened smell and hearing. These powers, as some called it, came at the cost of the life of one animal or insect, which scientists and other people at the time thought nothing about.
In the next coming years, this drug made its way around the world. The animals were dying off quickly, but no one seemed to care. All the people cared about was getting these heightened senses and the ability to hear what other animals were thinking. The people at this time were not thinking about how this would affect the future generations.
Within ten years, 75 percent of the population had acquired this special drug one way or another. This was when something went wrong. The person the scientists originally experimented on went insane and tried to kill everyone around him. From the stories I've been told, he acted like the animal he shared the drug with; a falcon. According to oral tradition, this man's fingers elongated into talons, his eyes turned a sickly glowing green, and he seemed to be able to hover above the ground. He killed everyone in the lab he was working at, and then escaped. No one knows what exactly happened to this man after he got free.
After that, it was like a domino effect. First, the people in Europe started to act like the animals or insects they were injected with. Once the rest of the world heard of this happening, other scientists tried to find a way to counteract the effects, but they were too late. The drug made its way to their minds and took over their bodies, forcing them to act as the animal or insect that they killed to acquire those special powers they so needed.
