I quietly knocked on the bathroom door when I heard crying.
"Yea?" My sister said weakly.
"Shay? What's wrong honey?" I called to my little sister. "Let me in"
My 15 year old sister slowly opened the door with puffy eyes. As soon as I could, I hugged her.
"I'm sorry" she started sobbing. She's been doing this since our parents got divorced.
"Let me see your arms." I looked at her desperately. It made me want to cry when I saw all the damage she had done to herself. I can't move out because I'm scared she'll do worse. Its okay though. I'm only 20. I have my whole life ahead of me. For now, I have to make sure she will have a life ahead of her too.
I take her in my arms and lead her to my room. After about 20 minutes she fells asleep.
I slowly get up and go to my computer. I have to sit there a few minutes to think of something, then I remember. Her favorite band. She has always wanted to go see this band called Black Veil Brides. They're okay. Not my thing.
You see, Shay is kinda like a rocker chic. Some douche bags at her school call her emo. Fuck them. I've always been more girly than her. No matter how different we were, we have always been best friends. She's my baby sister after all.
I opened my browser and looked up the tour dates for the band. I knew they were going on tour because it's all she talks about. "I wanna go see bvb!" "Can we please get concert tickets?" "Can I at least get the new album?" I figured she should get what she wants for once.
When I found a tour date at a venue close to us I gladly got out my credit card and paid for two tickets. I figured she'd either want to bring a friend or want me to go in with her.
After I printed out the tickets and put them where she can't find them, I went downstairs to get some food. When I was in the kitchen I heard the front door open and close.
"Hello? I'm home!" My mom called out.
"Hello mom. How was work?" I smiled and sat on the couch with my apple.
"It was okay, how was your day Lexi?" she kissed my the forehead as she walked past.
"It was pretty good. I went grocery shopping for you."
"Oh thank you. You know I hate shopping! Where's Shay?"
"She's in my room sleeping. She is kinda upset.."
"Anything in particular today? I feel bad I can't help her." my mom frowned and sat with me.
"I don't know, she didn't seen to want to talk about it so I didn't ask. I can take her to therapy tomorrow if you need me to."
"That would work great, that way I can get a few more hours in! Maybe we can do something when I get paid?"
"That would be great too. I wanna tell you something but you have to promise you won't tell Shay."
"Hmm okay?" she looked at me very confused.
"I got her tickets to see that band she really likes. The concert is in two weeks!" I lowered my voice when I said that.
"Oh Lexi you're an amazing sister! Your sister is going to be so happy!" she gasped.
As if on que, Shay walked down the stairs yawning. "Hello sleeping beauty" my mom smiled at her.
"Mhm hi" she replied staggering into the kitchen.
"What do you want for dinner girls?"
"Food?" I laughed.
"Oh you smartass" my mom chuckled and got off the couch, me following.
"Hmm what was the last thing you made at work?" Shay asked as she looked through the fridge.
"Pasta with amazing Alfredo sauce, want me to make that?"
My mom is the head chef at a great place in town and she's trying to earn enough money to start her own restaurant.
"Ooh yea!" Shay laughed and hugged our mom. "Need any help?"
"Sure!" my mom always loved having help in the kitchen. Before the divorce, all four of us would be in the kitchen and we would all make dinner together. Sometimes I miss my dad. I can't forget what he did. I am glad he's gotten better though.
After we had finished making a beautiful meal, I went to answer the phone. "Hello?"
"Hello, is the guardian of Shay Strong home?"
"Uhm may I ask who's calling?" I asked the caller hesitantly.
"Oh, yes, this is Jill at Green Valley High School."
"Oh! Hi Jill, it's Lexi, I'll get my mom for ya"
"Thank you sweetie. How have you been?"
"Pretty good" I replied as I walked into the dining room. "How are your grandchildren?" Jill was always really nice to me when I went to school.
"They're great! Trish is growing so fast!" she loves talking about the youngest adorable kid in her family
"Awh well here's my mom. It was great talking to you!" I told her goodbye as I handed the phone to my mother.
"Who was that?" Shay looked at me when mom left the room.
"Your school." I looked at here angrily. "Why are they calling home?"
"I don't know" she looked down at her plate and played with her food.
"I guess we'll just have to find out then..." I'm going to kill that girl.
After almost 20 minutes, mom walked back into the dining room and sat down with us. "Shay? What's going on?"
"With what?" Shay asked acting clueless.
"Shay Ivy Strong!" My mother raised her voice. "What the hell made you think you can just not go to class!?"
I looked at my sister in awe. She has always been such a great student. She's just sitting there hiding behind her long black hair, playing with her food. "I'm sorry" was all she muttered.
"Please. Please just tell us why." I urged my sister.
"I couldn't go."
Both me and my mother looked at each other. "What?" we asked her at the same time.
"I couldn't go into a classroom without being tripped, or laughed at, or insulted!" she yelled at us and started crying. "I couldn't go in there without wanting to fucking kill myself!" she screamed and ran upstairs. I looked at my mother and she slowly started crying. I put my hand on her steady shoulder and kissed the top of her head before I ran after my sister.
